Title
1300 block of West Highway 24
Location
On The above date and time a dark colored Kia sedan was traveling westbound in the 1300 block of West Highway 24, at a high rate of speed, when it struck the rear end of a silver Mercedes sedan, which was also westbound on Highway 24. The resulting crash caused the Mercedes to drive off the right side of the road, knocking over two utility poles, and landing on its side. The driver of this vehicle was pinned inside and had to be extricated by members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department. The Mercedes driver was then transported to an area hospital and was treated for serious bodily injury.

The driver of the Kia fled the scene but was located a short distance away. The driver, 30 year Zachary Brown of Colorado Springs, was found to be intoxicated and was subsequently arrested. He was not injured.

The Major Accident Unit responded to the scene to assume the investigation. Mr. Brown was charged with a variety of charges to include Vehicular Assault, DUI, and reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury.

The westbound lanes of Highway 24 were closed due to the on scene investigation and were reopened at approximately 4 AM; however, utility workers will be occupying the right shoulder to repair the down utility poles. Citizens are asked to exercise caution if they have to drive west in that stretch of the road.

The investigation is continuing.
