On 09/03/2016 Officers were dispatched to 3988 Dublin Bl., Cottonwood Park, to investigate a report of shots fired. Upon arrival officers discovered several chemical bottle bombs located throughout the parking lot that had exploded prior to police arrival. Officers completed a thorough check of the area and discovered several more devices that had not exploded. Members of the Bomb Squad responded along with CSFD HAZMAT and rendered the devices safe. There are no suspects in custody and the investigation is ongoing.

Airport/Academy to 400 N. Chelton Rd.
Location
At Airport and Academy, a CSPD officer observed a Honda Civic sedan which had been reported stolen in Denver. As he attempted to make contact with the vehicle and driver, the vehicle fled, at various times the car drove the wrong way on the city's southeast thoroughfares and at speeds above 70 mph. The traffic was light and officers pursued. The vehicular chase ended when the lead officer initiated tactical vehicle intervention in the 400 block of Chelton Rd., as the car drove north in the southbound right through lane of Chelton. The stolen Honda rotated clockwise on all four wheels, crossed all lanes of the roadway, struck the east curb, continued across the sidewalk, and came to rest in the parking lot of a nearby business. No one was injured. The driver, 23 year-old Markus Ortiz was arrested on numerous charges, including Motor Vehicle Theft, Felony Eluding, and numerous traffic violations.

On the above date and time a Dodge pickup truck backed into a Subaru sedan in a parking lot in the 800 block of Emory Cir. After striking the Subaru, the Dodge pickup left the scene without exchanging information with the driver of the Subaru. The Dodge was stopped at Emory Cir/N Murray Bl by officers, and the driver was arrested for multiple traffic charges including DUI. No one was injured in the crash.

On 9-2-16, at approximately 8:32 am, Colorado Springs Police Department received a call in regards to a vehicle vs building traffic collision. Initial information was the driver had a medical emergency causing him to lose control of his vehicle which struck an occupied apartment.

Upon arrival, CSFS was on scene and removed the driver who sustained no further obvious injury. The occupant of the apartment was able to self evacuate without incident. The driver also struck a transformer and light pole before striking the apartment. The residence will be unlivable until repairs are completed.

On Thursday, September 1, 2016, at 12:59PM, Stetson Hills Division patrol officers responded to the 3400 block of Rebecca Lane to investigate a reported sexual assault. Upon arrival officers contacted an adult female who reported being sexually assaulted in her residence by an adult male.

Detectives assigned to the Special Victims Section – Adult Sexual Assault Unit responded to assume the investigation. As a result of collaboration between detectives, patrol officers and officers assigned to the Stetson Hills IMPACT team, a suspect was identified and taken into custody at his residence in the 3500 block of Knoll Lane on September 1, 2016, at approximately 5:00PM.

The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Kenneth Martez Preston. He was booked at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on multiple felony criminal counts.

Investigation by the Special Victims Section continues.

Chapel Hills Drive and Research Parkway

On the above date and time the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of an auto/pedestrian accident near the intersection of Chapel Hills Drive and Research Parkway.

Upon arrival officers found that a motorcycle driver was involved in the accident and had suffered serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he is being treated for those injuries.

The Major Accident Unit responded and assumed the investigation into this incident. This investigation revealed the motorcycle driver was attempting a left hand turn onto Research Parkway from Chapel Hills Drive when he struck a curb. This resulted in him being thrown from his motorcycle and into the southbound lane of traffic. He was subsequently struck by a vehicle travelling southbound. The motorcycle driver was not wearing a helmet.

No charges have been filed against either driver and the investigation is continuing. Alcohol and speed are not considered factors in this accident.

On Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 11:15 PM, officers responded to a robbery with a weapon in the 1700 block of Dublin Boulevard. The suspect reportedly entered the business pointing a gun at the employee and demanded money. The employee told the suspect no and the suspect fired one shot in his direction with a handgun. The employee was not injured and the suspect fled the area on foot.

The suspect was described as a black male, 30 years of age, 5’10” tall, with a 180 pound athletic build, wearing a blue hoodie, matching blue pants, and white shoes. The suspect was wearing black fleece gloves, a grey mask over the lower portion of his face, and had hazel colored eyes.

On 08/31/2016 at approximately 9:53 p.m., numerous CSPD officers were dispatched to a traffic accident in the intersection of Hancock Expressway and South Powers Boulevard. A white sport utility vehicle and a motorcycle collided in the intersection. Preliminary reports indicated the driver of the sport utility vehicle was turning left to travel north on South Powers Boulevard when the motorcycle struck the passenger side of the vehicle. The driver of the motorcycle was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. At the time this ETACS neither driver has been cited for any traffic violations pending further investigation. Drugs and alcohol to not appear to be factors in the traffic accident. The investigation is continuing at this time.

On 08/31/16 at 1256 hours, CSPD was notified of a possible dead body located in an alley in the 1400 block of N. Hancock Ave. Officers arrived on scene and located an unidentified male in a dumpster. The initial investigation led officers to believe the death was suspicious so the Homicide Unit was contacted. Detectives responded and took over the investigation. The investigation is continuing by detectives and the Coroner’s Officer.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the August 30, 2016 passing of retired CSPD Sergeant Wayne Rodney Anderson at 93 years of age. Sergeant Anderson served with the department for twenty-five years, beginning on January 1, 1952 through January 3, 1977.

Attendance by off-duty sworn and civilian personnel is voluntary. Off-duty sworn personnel are approved to wear the “Class A” uniform to include a long-sleeved shirt and tie. It is appropriate for all officers to wear a mourning band on their badges in the 2 o’clock to 8 o’clock position during the service.

Neither sworn nor civilian off-duty personnel are authorized to operate or ride in a city vehicle to or from the event. No overtime or comp time compensation is approved for off-duty members who attend. On-duty personnel may attend with supervisor approval.
