Assault
Title
3200 Monica Drive
Location
On 04-10-15 at approximately 1817 hours, the CSPD communication center began receiving calls regarding shots being fired in the area of 3200 Monica Drive. Officers from the Sand Creek Division were dispatched to the area. Officer Jeremiah Ward was in the area and also heard shots being fired.

Officer Ward located a damaged vehicle in the front yard of a residence located in the 2800 block of Monica Drive West. The vehicle located in the yard matched the description of the suspect vehicle of the shots fired calls for service. Officer Ward observed and pursued on foot an occupant of the vehicle that was running away. The suspect was apprehended without incident.

Officers returned to the scene of the damaged vehicle and to the scene of the original shots fired call for service to begin the investigation. The investigation revealed that the suspect vehicle, a Lincoln sedan, was in the area of 3200 Monica Drive and fired multiple shots into the air. An adult male who lives in the area observed the vehicle and got into his vehicle, a Toyota 4runner, and pursued the Lincoln sedan. Multiple shots were fired in the air and at the Toyota 4runner during the vehicle chase that occurred throughout that neighborhood. One of the bullets entered an occupied residence located in the 4000 block of Charleston Drive. At the corner of Wyatt Street and Monica Drive West, the driver of the Toyota 4runner intentionally struck the Lincoln sedan in the rear quarter panel which caused the Lincoln to become disabled in the front yard.

The driver of the Toyota (Randy Gales 34 year old male) was arrested for Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief and Menacing.

The driver of the Lincoln (Deshan Smith 23 year old male) was arrested for Attempted Second Degree Assault, Menacing, and weapon violations.

There were no injuries by anyone involved in the call. Multiple shell casings were recovered at multiple locations.

Traffic Crash
Title
E. Platte Ave/Babcock Road
Location
On 04/10/2015 at approximately 1435hrs, the CSPD Communication Center received several calls for a single car traffic accident in the area of E. Platte Ave/ Babcock Road. Witnesses reported the vehicle had flipped and was laying in the middle of the roadway.

During the initial investigation,it was discovered the vehicle was travelling westbound on E. Platte Ave at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was in the far right lane, when another vehicle was attempting to merge onto E. Platte Ave from Babcock Road.

Due to the vehicle's speed, the driver attempted to avoid striking the merging vehicle by passing the car on the right shoulder of the roadway.

Once the vehicle was on the shoulder, the driver lost control and the car traveled across all lanes of westbound and eastbound roadways of Platte Ave, down the embankment, and coming to an "uncontrolled" stop.

The vehicle was upside down on its roof and was blocking both lanes of traffic on Babcock Rd, just to the south of Platte Ave.

The driver and passenger were both taken to the hospital. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Title
Near Mosquito Pass Dr and Rio Vista Dr
Location
Yesterday at approximately 1421hrs some Good Samaritans, who prefer to remain anonymous, found a child just under 3 years old wandering the street in the area of Mosquito Pass Dr and Rio Vista Dr in northeast Colorado Springs. They quite likely averted a tragedy by doing the exact right thing. They kept the child in a safe place near where they found him and immediately called the Police to report it. The Officers responding were unable to locate the childís home in a timely fashion, and the child was taken to the Stetson Hills substation until a safe place could be located for the child.

The mother did not realize her child was missing until sometime later, finally calling into the Police at approximately 1538hrs, nearly an hour and 40 minutes after her son was found.

The ensuing investigation discovered that the mother had left her son in the care of his grandmother at their home not far from where the child was found wandering while she went to pick up another child from school. However, she had not made sure the grandmother knew she was supposed to be watching the child. The grandmother noticed the child was gone, but thought that he had gone with mom.

The Department of Human Services responded, and will be conducting follow up to assist the family. Due to the circumstances, the child was returned to the family, and no one was charged criminally.

In this case, a simple miscommunication could have led to a disastrous outcome. The CSPD would like to remind parents and guardians that, even in the chaos of daily life, please make sure communication has taken place regarding who is supposed to be watching a child at all times.
