Printers Parkway & Parkside Drive Roundabout
Current Status: City Engineering has selected Jacobs Engineering as the consultant to provide design services for this Hazard Elimination System (HES) federal aid program project. The design process will take approximately nine months, being completed in June of 2014. Construction is anticipated to begin in August of 2014.
Background: City Engineering is proposing to convert the traffic control at the existing unsignalized intersection of Printers Parkway and Parkside Drive to a single lane modern roundabout. The rate of accidents at this intersection of Parkside Drive has the highest crash rate for a City owned roadway in Colorado Springs. The years 2008-2010 reflect a crash rate that puts it 2nd highest in Colorado Springs over the three year period.
Due to the wide median and right-of-way footprint of the intersection, City Engineering staff believe the best solution to address the cross traffic conflict problem is with the construction of a roundabout. Roundabouts have proven to have less severe crashes and in this case would practically eliminate all front to side crashes.
