The Victim: Donald Robert Laabs, 28 years old, a Sergeant with the Manitou Springs Police Department was shot and killed in his vehicle on December 18, 1975.


The Crime: On Thursday, December 18, 1975, at about 8:30 p.m., the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of an apparently deceased male in a vehicle stopped along I-25 near the Arvada St. exit.  Arriving officers found Donald R. Laabs, deceased from gunshot wounds, behind the driver's seat of his personal vehicle on the shoulder of I-25. 


The Investigation: Dozens of persons associated with Sgt. Laabs, both personally and professionally, were interviewed over the next several months, however the motive for the murder was not clearly established, and no viable suspect(s) were identified.  The investigation into Sgt. Donald Laabs's death remains open. 


The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year.
