The Victim: Virgil Delano Gambles was murdered on 4/17/1974. Gamble was 29 years old at the time of his death. He was married and a father of one.
The Crime: Late on the evening of April 17th at 11:26 p.m. police were called to the Brown Jug Liquor Store on 729 E. Cucharras regarding shots being fired.
Earlier that evening the victim, his brother and a nephew went to the Brown Jug Liquor store, where they recognized others drinking in the back parking lot. A physical confrontation ensued between Virgil Gamble's brother and another male. The victim, his brother and nephew left, to return later to purchase beer.
As Virgil Gambles, his brother and nephew approached the front door of the liquor store shots rang out. All three parties were shot. Virgil Gamble was taken to the hospital where he died of gunshot wounds.
The Investigation: As of this date this case remains unsolved.
The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year.
