Trooper Involved Shooting Investigation Update

On January 22, 2015 at approximately 12:53AM, a Trooper with the Colorado State Patrol initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at South Academy Boulevard and I-25. The driver did not immediately stop, and continued to drive northbound on Academy Blvd. At Academy Blvd and Shelley Ave., the driver stopped and the Trooper attempted to place the driver into custody. The driver resisted arrest and assaulted the Trooper. During the assault, the Trooper discharged his weapon, striking the driver. The driver was taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious wounds and the Trooper was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The Colorado Springs Police Department arrived to assist the Trooper and began an investigation, in conjunction with the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, into the shooting. The investigation is ongoing at this time and more details will be released as appropriate.


The arrestee in this investigation has been identified as Joseph Francis Cimeno, age 55. He has been arrested for Second Degree Assault on a Peace Officer, a class 4 felony.
