Colorado Springs, CO– On November 7, 2014 at 9:15pm, several calls were received for a fire at the Courtyard at De Cortez apartment complex. Colorado Springs firefighters were dispatched to 3006 De Cortez St with reports of a possible trapped victim. CSFD Engine 7 arrived within 5 minutes to the apartment building and reported heavy fire and smoke showing from the 2nd floor apartment and declared this a “working fire.”

CSFD responded to this structure fire with 2 fire engines, 2 fire trucks and a Battalion Chief on the first alarm. After the “working fire” assignment was added there were 26 firefighters on scene working to setup water supply, fire attack, rescue, ventilation, salvage and overhaul. Firefighters were able to make an interior fire attack and held the fire to one apartment.

Primary search of the apartment by Truck 8 found a male victim in the apartment. The victim was rescued from the apartment and was transferred to CSFD firefighters that were waiting to provide the victim ALS emergency medical care.  The male patient was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Fire investigators have ruled this fire as “Under Investigation”.  The fire scene will continue to be under investigation with no further details on the cause of death until the results of an autopsy are complete.

There were no injuries to other residents or firefighters reported during this fire.  All other residents were allowed to return to their apartments. The CSFD “After the Fire” program and the American Red Cross made contact with the residents to address any of their concerns before returning to their apartments.
