Death Investigation Update

Friday, November 8, 2013, 11:45 AM [RELEASE AT WILL]

UPDATE: The Coroner’s Office has completed an autopsy on our victim and ruled the manner of death as homicide and the cause: gun shot wound.

The victim has been identified as 22 year old Carlos Espinoza.  This marks the 28th homicide for the city of Colorado Springs.  No suspects have been identified at this time but our Violent Crimes Unit continues to actively investigate.

On Thursday, November 7, 2013, at about 8:41PM, Officers of the Sand Creek Division were dispatched to the area of Byron Drive and South Murray Blvd in reference to a shots fired call.

Upon arrival at about 8:43PM, Officers located a male party in the roadway who was suffering from gunshot wounds.  The victim was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds.

CSPD Violent Crimes Detectives responded and are in the early stages of the investigation.  Numerous witnesses are being interviewed and the scene processed for evidence.  It is believed that the roadway in both directions will be shut down through the morning rush hour and alternate routes are suggested.

At this time, no suspects have been arrested.  If this incident is ruled a homicide by the Coroner’s Office, it will be the 28th of the year.
