Cottonwood Creek Drainage Basin Planning Study Open House

The City of Colorado Springs Stormwater Enterprise is hosting an open house for the Cottonwood Creek Drainage Basin Planning Study (DBPS) on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The open house will be held in the Community Room at the Cottonwood Creek Recreation Center at 3920 Dublin Boulevard.

The City has contracted with a local engineering consultant, Matrix Design Group, to update the Cottonwood Creek DBPS which includes the Cottonwood Creek drainage basin and the South Pine Creek drainage basin. This study was previously updated in 1994 and 2000 and has an anticipated late 2009 completion date for this update. Public input on issues within the drainage basins was received at an open house in July 2008.  Matrix Design Group has evaluated those issues, identified others in the basin, and has recommended solutions to address the issues. These will be reviewed at the open house.

The Cottonwood Creek drainage basin covers approximately 19 square miles and extends northeasterly beyond Black Forest Road and flows into Monument Creek just downstream of Woodmen Road.

Several locations along the creek are experiencing significant erosion as a result of increased flows. The study will recommend solutions for addressing these areas and ways to address increasing flows from new development. The study will also help prioritize areas for any available project funding from the Stormwater Enterprise or other sources.
