Structure Fire at the Sunset Creek Apartments

Colorado Springs, CO - Colorado Springs Fire Department firefighters were dispatched to a reported structure fire located at 5426 N Nevada at the Sunset Creek Apartments at 7:56am on March 1, 2012. Responding fire engines reported smoke showing while they were en route and requested additional units. The first fire engine arrived at 8:04am to find a fire and smoke coming from the first and second floor of the apartment building.

It took around 10 minutes to locate the fire and put the main body of it out. All the fire and hot spots were extinguished within an hour. This was a two alarm fire and CSFD responded with three fire engines, two fire trucks, the heavy rescue unit, hazardous materials team and six support apparatus. CSFD had 35 firefighters on scene working to put out the fire. Many residents evacuated and were asked to go to the club house on premise. Other residents that were still in their apartments were asked to stay in place was safer for them until the smoke in the hallways had cleared.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire. Working smoke alarms sounded alerting the residents to call 9-1-1. Due to the damage of two apartment units, two families were displaced and The American Red Crossis assisting them with any needs they may have. The damage estimates are:

The fire investigators have determined that this fire was intentionally set by a juvenile. Since the juvenile is over the age of ten, they were cited for 1stdegree arson and 4thdegree endangerment arson.
