Fillmore/Union Corridor Improvements

View video on Triple Left Turn Lane

Project Description: The intent of the corridor improvements were to combine two safety and traffic operations improvement projects into a single design and construction project.

Fillmore/Union Intersection
The project included:

  • adding an eastbound left-turn lane
  • adding a southbound through lane
  • adding a southbound right-turn lane
  • modifying the westbound lanes through to Templeton Gap Rd
  • extending the northbound acceleration/deceleration lane to Templeton Gap Rd., and
  • providing new traffic signals.
Templeton Gap Rd. to Hancock Ave.

The finished triple left turn lanes taht were a part of the improvements to this location have been operating smoothly.

Construction under way near the Fillmore/Union intersection.

Templeton Gap Rd. to Hancock Avenue

The project included:

  • Widening to provide for a third eastbound through lane, which became a right-turn lane at Hancock Ave.
  • reconstruction of curb, gutter, sidewalks, and driveways as needed,
  • new traffic signals, and
  • a new storm drain system.

As part of this project Colorado Springs drivers traveling east on Fillmore Street who turn north onto Union Boulevard are using the City's first side-by-side triple left turn lane. Drivers should treat the triple left turn as they would any turn, by staying in their lane of travel. To aid the traveling public the lanes were built wider, 14 to 16 feet wide rather than the typical 11 to 12 foot width, and the lanes are delineated by dotted lines.

Total Estimated Project Cost: $2.602M

Project Schedule: Final Design/ROW/Bid - September 2005 to October 2006; Construction - September 2006 to May 2007.
