Traffic Crash - Fatality
Title
Cheyenne Meadows Road and Highway 115
Location
On January 17, 2018, at approximately 3:30 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a crash involving an automobile and a bicycle at the intersection of Highway 115 and Star Ranch Road. Upon arrival, the officers found a bicyclist who was struck by a vehicle as the vehicle was attempting an unprotected left turn from westbound Cheyenne Meadows Road onto southbound Highway 115. The bicyclist was immediately transported to an area hospital for treatment. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Accident Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for this investigation.

The investigation revealed that 89 year old Ernest Eldridge of Colorado Springs was attempting the aforementioned left turn when he struck the bicyclist, who was crossing the intersection legally, eastbound, on a green light. Alcohol, speed, and drugs are not considered factors in this wreck; however, the daylight conditions did make visibility challenging.

On January 30, 2018, the bicyclist succumbed to the injuries suffered during this crash. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identity. This is the fifth traffic related fatality in Colorado Springs in 2018 and the first bicyclist to be killed this year. At this time last year, there was one traffic related fatality.

This is still an active investigation. Charges pending after the completion and review of this investigation.
