Location
Due to damage at a Colorado Springs Utilities electrical substation, a large portion of central Colorado Springs is currently without power. The area affected is generally within the following boundaries: Academy Blvd to the east, Circle to the west, E. Platte Ave to the north and Airport Rd to the south. Utilities anticipated the outage to last about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

This will also affect traffic lights in the above described area. Residents are reminded to treat intersections that are affected by the outage as 4 way stops and to proceed through the intersections with caution.

1000 Blk of Ranier Dr.

On the above date and time, CSPD officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1000 Block of Ranier Drive regarding a burglary in progress. The reporting party advised police dispatch they had observed an unknown male attempting to make entry into the residence through a window and then observed flashlights inside the residence. Upon arrival, Officer Ausec observed an open door and saw what appeared to be a flashlight being used within the residence. Investigation revealed the residence was condemned and unlawful to occupy. Containment was set up on the residence and with the assistance of K-9 Officer Brian Kelly, announcements were given for the occupants to vacate the residence. One male and one female exited the house after several announcements. They were both subsequently charged with Trespassing. While officers were clearing the residence, a second male was found hiding in the garage. He was taken into custody and charged with Trespassing and failure to exit the residence and was booked into CJC on an unrelated warrant. CSFD responded due to the house being filled with smoke. It appeared several small fire pits had been erected inside the house and were smoldering. There were no utilities active at the residence.

Location
On the above date and time a lone male suspect entered the McDonalds Restaurant at 1244 N. Academy Blvd and demanded money from an employee. The suspect is described as a white male in his mid 30's to early 40's, approx. 5'7"-5'9", medium build with blonde or strawberry blonde hair and a goatee and moustache. He was wearing a black puffy jacket with a hood and blue jeans. No weapons were displayed or mentioned during this incident. The suspect fled on foot westbound on E. San Miguel Street with an undisclosed amount of money. Officers flooded the area within minutes, but due to the heavy snowfall at the time, any tracks left behind were covered.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is on Accident Alert status as of January 27, 2014 at 6:40PM due to road conditions. Drivers are reminded if they are involved in a traffic accident with no fatality or injury requiring medical attention, no driver involved is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, all drivers are present with license, registration and insurance information, and no damage to public property such as a street sign or utility pole has occurred, drivers should exchange their information and follow the procedure for completing a counter (cold) report. When damage to any vehicle requires a wrecker, a counter report can still be made providing the previous criteria is met. Drivers can either pick up a traffic accident report form at any of the police department substations or they can go on line at Springsgov.com, go to the CSPD homepage and select “report a minor traffic accident” for instructions. Drivers should also be reminded to take the appropriate steps to avoid being involved in a traffic accident during adverse weather and road conditions. Drivers should check road and travel conditions before heading out and leave more time to get to their destination. Drivers need to travel at a safe speed for the conditions and leave an increased and safe following distance from the vehicle in front of them. Drivers should use streets and roadways less hazardous in winter driving conditions. Drivers also need to remove snow and ice obstructing their vision and have adequate snow tires on their vehicles.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male wearing dark clothing.

On Sunday January 26th, 2014 approx. 6:45pm, the Colorado Springs Police Dept. responded to the King Soopers at Centennial Blvd and Fillmore regarding a shoplift. The unknown male and female suspects left the store and entered a vehicle later determined to be stolen. The suspect vehicle was last seen east bound on Fillmore St. At approx. 6:51pm, a CSPD officer observed a vehicle matching the suspect’s description parked in the parking lot of the 7-11, Fillmore and Wood Ave. The officer parked near the suspect vehicle and exited his marked police cruiser as the same two suspects from the shoplift, exited the 7-11 and entered the suspect vehicle. The unknown male suspect driver intentionally back into the marked police cruiser and drove away at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle was not pursued. The officer was not hurt as a result of this incident. The police cruiser sustained moderate damage. The suspect vehicle is described as a Silver Chevrolet Truck bearing Co 978-XCZ. Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Astrozon Bl and Academy Bl on a three car traffic accident. At this time, the crash is currently being investigated and there are road closures.

Northbound Academy Blvd at Hancock Blvd is completely shut-down.

Southbound Academy Blvd at Astrozon Blvd there are no left turns onto eastbound Astrozon Blvd.

Eastbound traffic on Astrozon approaching Academy, there is no "through lanes" open, drivers can only go south bound or north bound on Academy.

Westbound traffic on Astrozon approaching Academy, drivers can not make a left turn to go southbound on Academy.

(Most of the accident scene is located in the northbound lanes of Academy Blvd on the southeast side of the roadway)

Due to more vehicles being out on the roadway because of the Christmas Holiday season, this area has become extremely congested with traffic. CSPD is requesting drivers find an alternate route at this time. It is unknown how long the intersection will be shut down.

Investigation Update: The Major Accident team responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. The investigation shows that vehicle #1, A PT Cruiser was southbound on Academy Blvd. approaching Astrozon. The traffic signal for southbound changed to red and a the east bound Astrozon light turned green. A green Dodge Dakota truck began to travel east on Astrozon and was struck by the PT Cruiser which failed to stop for the red light. The Green truck was subsequently pushed into a white Ford truck which was stopped for the light on north bound Academy. A 6 year old passenger in the PT Cruiser sustained injury and was transported from the scene to a local hospital. The driver of the PT Cruiser, Identified as Brenda Hurt, a 22 year old female and aunt to the injured child. Alcohol and drugs may have been a factor in the accident. Charges are pending further investigation
