Update: The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Violent Crimes Section, Homicide Unit, has made two arrests in the death investigation related to the 6300 block of La Plata Peak Drive and the 6100 block of Barnes road.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has completed the autopsy on the deceased male who was found in the 6100 block of Barnes Road on February 6, 2017. The male has been identified as 28 year old Colorado Springs resident Manuel L. Vigil. The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound. The manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Homicide Unit arrested two persons in connection with the death of Manuel L. Vigil and the shooting of another. They are identified as 23 year old William Prine, arrested for murder in the first degree, and 27 year old Matthew Houston, arrested for complicity to murder in the first degree. Both are residents of Colorado Springs. The arrestees’ photos will be posted on Twitter when available.

This is the sixth homicide of 2017. Last year at this time there were no homicides in Colorado Springs.

On February 6, 2017, at approximately 4:48 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to the 6300 block of La Plata Peak Drive, regarding multiple shots fired. When officers arrived in the area, they received additional information that a vehicle, described as a pick-up truck had been shot at, and was no longer on scene.

The Communications Center immediately aired the vehicle description, where it was located by officers a short time later in the 6100 block of Barnes Road. As officers approached the pick-up truck, they discovered two males inside the vehicle, one male was deceased with what appeared to be a gunshot wound, and another male appeared to be wounded from a single gunshot. He was transported to a local hospital.

The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Violent Crimes Section, Homicide Unit, responded to the scene and initiated a death investigation. This is an active investigation. At this time there is no danger to the public.

An El Paso County Grand Jury has indicted twelve individuals on charges of violating the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA) and various other charges including burglary, theft, criminal mischief, money laundering and computer crimes for their involvement in a multi-state cell phone theft ring and fencing operation.

The indictment covers a series of burglaries that occurred throughout Colorado and New Mexico between June 29 and August 10, 2015 involving a total of twenty-five cell phone stores and over $325,000.00 in merchandise.

On January 12, 2017, the Grand Jury handed down a 79 count indictment against twelve individuals, two of whom were juveniles at the time of their alleged offenses. The indictment alleges that the defendants worked together to break into twenty-five cell phone stores in Colorado and New Mexico and steal primarily cell phones during those burglaries. It is further alleged that the cell phones were then resold to unsuspecting customers through E-bay and other means by CT Electronics and GT Electronics.

The indicted individuals include Carlos Trejo, 31, Halat Gozeh, 21, Erric Carolina, 35, Antivius Crowder, 23, Isaiah Pickett, 21, Dominic Daniels, 22, Demetrius Jefferson, 24, Elyce Schmidt, 21, Cameron Sprenger, 22, Devante Hunter, 25, and two juveniles. All of the indicted individuals are from Colorado Springs except Cameron Sprenger who is from Ft. Collins. They have all been arrested and most are currently in custody in the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on bonds ranging from $50,000 to $500,000.

The Colorado Springs Police Department led this greater than year-long investigation and were assisted by investigators from the Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, police departments in Greeley, Loveland, Aurora, Arvada, Castle Rock, Littleton, Lakewood, Pueblo, Lone Tree, Golden, Thornton, and Albuquerque, New Mexico and sheriff’s offices from Jefferson County and Arapahoe County.

Please remember that these charges are merely allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

On 2-6-17, Officers were dispatched to robbery with a weapon that occurred at the above listed address. Upon arrival in the area they contacted the clerk who advised that 4 or 5 suspects entered the store with weapons and demanded money and product from the store. The suspects then left the area on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. The clerk was not hurt during the incident. This incident is possibly linked to the earlier robbery in the Falcon Division. Investigation is ongoing.

On 02-06-2017 at approximately 0327 hours, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a call from a convenience store in the 2200 block of Research Parkway. The reporting party was the store clerk who said he had been robbed by four unknown individuals at gunpoint. At least one of the suspects was armed with a shotgun. The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and other retail items.
The suspects appeared to arrive on foot; however they took the store clerk’s key and got away in his vehicle. The RP’s vehicle was a silver colored late model Mazda 3 with an unknown temp tag.
There were no injuries reported during this incident.

Update **The victims vehicle was recovered in the area of the robbery**

All roads open at 0620hrs.

On the above date and time, a fully marked CSPD police car was travelling southbound on Nevada Ave at the intersection with Pikes Peak Ave. A truck was travelling east on Pikes Peak Ave and struck the police car.

The officer was transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. No one in the truck was injured.

The driver of the truck, 22 year old Whitney Huskin was evaluated for DUI.

The intersection remains closed while the investigation is completed.
