On 05/30/2014, 1259 hrs., CSPD received a call of an attempted Carjacking at the Promenade Shops at Briargate, 1800 Briargate Parkway. The investigation revealed that the victim walked to her vehicle when she was approached by the suspect. The suspect displayed a weapon and entered the victim’s vehicle. The victim kicked the gun out of the suspect’s hand as the suspect entered the vehicle. The suspect picked the gun up off the ground, got out of the vehicle and left the scene. The victim, a 70 year old female, was not injured. The suspect was described as a White Female, 30-50 years old, 5 ft. 7 in. to 5 ft. 10 in. tall, heavy build, dark hair, wearing all black clothing.

On Thursday, May 29, 2014 at approximately 11:15am, the Colorado Springs Police Dept. responded to a call regarding a 5 month old infant that had been left unattended in a car in the parking lot of the TJ Maxx store, located at 3830 Bloomington Street in Colorado Springs. The infants mother, the arrestee, had gone into the store to make a return and had left the child sleeping in its car seat. The Fire Department also had arrived on scene and used tools to enter the vehicle to check the child, who was sitting in direct sunlight in 73 degree heat. Follow up investigation revealed the child had been in the vehicle unattended and in direct sunlight for approximately 20 minutes. The child checked ok and the mother was contacted, identified and arrested for child abuse.

700 North Circle Drive

On 05-28-14 at approximately 1524 hours, an officer from the Sand Creek Division attempted to stop a speeder driving a white SUV northbound at the 700 block of North Circle Drive. The driver, later identified as Christopher Flores (26), refused to stop and accelerated out of the area. Seconds later, it was determined that the white SUV was reported stolen out of El Paso County (EPSO). A short time later Officers for the Creek Enforcement Team (CET) located the vehicle and made a second attempt to stop the vehicle. Again the vehicle refused to stop leading officers on a chase. After a short pursuit the suspect parked the vehicle in the 3000 block of Gomer Drive and ran into the neighborhood northbound. Officers immediately set up containment of the area, allowing Police K-9 Units to respond and conduct a thorough search within the containment area. Residents were urged to stay indoors as the search for the suspect began. At approximately 1635 hours the suspect was located by K-9 Units in the back yard of a residence in the 2900 block of Hudson Drive, and after seeing the police dog, the suspect made a sound decision to give up to K-9 Officers without further incident. Christopher Flores was charged with Vehicular Eluding, Motor Vehicle Theft, Obstruction, along with additional traffic charges.

The Colorado Springs Police Department received a report of a robbery that had occurred in the parking lot of the Citadel Mall, 760 Citadel Drive E. Officers responded into the area looking for what was described as a Hispanic male suspect. The suspect was not located in the area. The victim was approached by a Hispanic male, 16 to 22 years of age, thin frame, 5’6” to 5’8” tall, dark colored hair and wearing a light colored T-shirt. The Hispanic male was armed with a semi-automatic handgun. The suspect demanded that the victim hand over her purse. The suspect took the purse and ran away.
The suspect was last seen running to a dark colored SUV which then left towards Academy Boulevard.

On 05-28-14 Officer Balka responded to a call of two male suspects attempting to enter several vehicles in the Springs Ranch neighborhood. Upon arrival Officer Balka was able to locate the two suspects hiding behind a vehicle. Officers were able to confirm that the two suspects had entered at least one vehicle.

The adult suspect was identified as Andrew D. Sandel. The second suspect was a juvenile male. Both suspects were arrested and charged with 1st Degree Criminal Trespass.

Officers Alamo and Lee were responding to a burglary in progress in the 2500 block of E. Willamette. Officers observed a vehicle that matched the suspect vehicle description. When officers called out with the license plate they were told the vehicle was a reported stolen vehicle out of El Paso County Sheriff's Office. A high risk stop was conducted and officers arrested James Beltz for being in possession of the stolen vehicle. In addition, officers recovered methamphetamines from the vehicle and a driver's license belonging to someone else. The driver had a revoked driver's license for an alcohol conviction. The suspect was taken to CJC.

Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Astrozon Bl and Academy Bl on a three car traffic accident. At this time, the crash is currently being investigated and there are road closures.

Northbound Academy Blvd at Hancock Blvd is completely shut-down.

Southbound Academy Blvd at Astrozon Blvd there are no left turns onto eastbound Astrozon Blvd.

Eastbound traffic on Astrozon approaching Academy, there is no "through lanes" open, drivers can only go south bound or north bound on Academy.

Westbound traffic on Astrozon approaching Academy, drivers can not make a left turn to go southbound on Academy.

(Most of the accident scene is located in the northbound lanes of Academy Blvd on the southeast side of the roadway)

Due to more vehicles being out on the roadway because of the Christmas Holiday season, this area has become extremely congested with traffic. CSPD is requesting drivers find an alternate route at this time. It is unknown how long the intersection will be shut down.

Investigation Update: The Major Accident team responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. The investigation shows that vehicle #1, A PT Cruiser was southbound on Academy Blvd. approaching Astrozon. The traffic signal for southbound changed to red and a the east bound Astrozon light turned green. A green Dodge Dakota truck began to travel east on Astrozon and was struck by the PT Cruiser which failed to stop for the red light. The Green truck was subsequently pushed into a white Ford truck which was stopped for the light on north bound Academy. A 6 year old passenger in the PT Cruiser sustained injury and was transported from the scene to a local hospital. The driver of the PT Cruiser, Identified as Brenda Hurt, a 22 year old female and aunt to the injured child. Alcohol and drugs may have been a factor in the accident. Charges are pending further investigation
