On November 10, 2017, at approximately 1:59 PM, the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 700 block of Cucharras Street. Upon arrival Colorado Springs Fire Department Crews observed heavy smoke, and as they made entry into the dwelling they encountered fire conditions. Fire Crews immediately conducted a primary search and discovered three victims inside the structure. All three victims were extricated from the structure at which time fire personnel immediately provided resuscitation efforts.

The victims were described as an adult male, deceased at the scene, a 6 year old transported to a local hospital and was pronounced deceased, and a 2 year old transported to a Denver hospital in critical condition.

The Colorado Springs Violent Crimes Section responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation in conjunction with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. This is an active scene.

Location
On the above date and time a shooting victim came into the hospital with a wound to his upper chest. A second victim was admitted with contusions to his face and head. Initial investigation revealed a fight involving several individuals took place in the parking lot of 400 Lionstone Drive. One victim was shot and is in serious condition with a non life threatening injury. A second victim was struck several times with a handgun. CSPD felony assault unit is conducting further investigation.

On 11/10/17 at 0241 hours officers were dispatched to Colorado and Cascade regarding a stabbing. When officers arrived they located a victim who had been stabbed in the lower right leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. There were two witnesses with the victim. The witnesses said they had been in a vehicle with the victim and another male. While in the area of 30th and Uintah the victim and the other male started fighting inside the vehicle. The fight spilled out of the car into the street. As a result of the fight the victim was stabbed in the lower right leg.

The two witnesses and the victim got back in the car and started driving to the hospital while they called 911. The other male left the area on foot. The 911 operator advised him to pull over and wait for assistance. They stopped at Colorado and Cascade where they were contacted by police and medical personnel.

Alcohol was involved. The incident is still under investigation at this time. There is no danger to the public at this time.

Just before 7PM, November 9th, CSPD officers were dispatched to the Summit Creek Apartments on South Chelton Rd. regarding shots fired. Officers arrived to find six cars had been shot, one of which was reportedly occupied at the time of the shooting. Two men received minor cuts, possibly from flying debris, during the barrage of gunfire. Officers found nearly two dozen shell casings immediately outside the perimeter fence of the apartment complex. Although several people were in their apartment homes at the time of the shooting, no one was seriously hurt. This case is still under investigation.

As reported in early December 2016 Detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department Financial Crimes Unit discovered an identity theft laboratory with over 100 victims in the 300 block of N Murray Boulevard. Kali Watson (26) and James McHenry (35) were arrested. Ms. Watson was sentenced to 6 years DOC. James McHenry who at the time already was already serving a 4 year sentence for ID theft on an unrelated case was subsequently sentenced to an additional 10 years concurrent with his 4 year sentence.

During the course of that investigation Heather Deview (34) was identified as an additional suspect. Today Deview was sentenced to 10 years DOC for her involvement in that case (17CR1077) as well as the following additional cases 17CR0048 – Identity Theft, 17CR1418 – Attempt to Influence a Public Servant, 17CR2952 – Identity Theft and 17CR2976 – Theft.

On November 8, 2017, the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Robbery Unit arrested 32 year old John Uaisele following the 12:20 PM robbery of the Valero Station located at 712 East Fillmore Street. The Robbery Unit identified a possible associated vehicle, which was later located in a motel parking lot in the 1600 block of South Nevada Avenue.

Information for the vehicle, as well as other investigative leads, led to the identification of Uaisele. Detectives set up at the location and arrested Uaisele as he exited his motel room.

Uaisele is believed to be responsible for a series of six business robberies. In four cases, the suspect threw large rocks at the victims and then took the cash drawer. Victims were assaulted and terrorized during several of these robberies. In two incidents, the suspect used a large knife to force the victim into unlocking the door.

November 7, 2017, 1:00 PM – Kwik Stop located at 847 East Platte Avenue.
November 8, 2017, 12:20 PM – Valero gas station located at 712 East Fillmore Road.

On the above date and time, Gold Hill officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Manitou Blvd to respond to a shooting. Officers arrived on scene and contacted the victim, who suffered a gunshot wound to his upper left arm. The victim said he was shot by the suspect inside their apartment. Officers contacted the suspect who was taken into custody without incident. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment. At this time the victim’s injuries is non-life threatening. There is no threat to the public at this time and the investigation is ongoing.

On Tuesday, Nov 7 at approx. 1444 hours, CSPD was notified of a robbery with a weapon that had just occurred at the Kangaroo Coffee shop at 3670 New Center Point in Colorado Springs. Officers learned that an unknown male had driven up to the order window of the drive through coffee shop in a silver or grey Hyundai SUV. The male pointed a handgun at a female victim employee and demanded money. The victim described the male as White or Hispanic, wearing a dark hoodie jacket and a ski mask and armed with a silver handgun. The employee gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of currency and the suspect drove away. The suspect vehicle was later discovered in a nearby parking lot and recovered. The suspect has not been located. Investigation is continuing by the Robbery Unit.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is on Accident Alert status as of Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at 8:40 PM due to road conditions. Drivers are reminded if they are involved in a traffic accident with no fatality or injury requiring medical attention, no driver involved is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, all drivers are present with license, registration and insurance information, and no damage to public property such as a street sign or utility pole has occurred, drivers should exchange their information and follow the procedure for completing a counter (cold) report. When damage to any vehicle requires a wrecker, a counter report can still be made providing the previous criteria is met. Drivers can either pick up a traffic accident report form at any of the police department substations or they can go on line at Coloradosprings.gov > Public Safety > Police > Report a Minor Traffic Accident (or cspd.coloradosprings.gov > Report a Minor Traffic Accident). Drivers should also be reminded to take the appropriate steps to avoid being involved in a traffic accident during adverse weather and road conditions. Drivers should check road and travel conditions before heading out and leave more time to get to their destination. Drivers need to travel at a safe speed for the conditions and leave an increased and safe following distance from the vehicle in front of them. Drivers should use streets and roadways less hazardous in winter driving conditions. Drivers also need to remove snow and ice obstructing their vision and have adequate snow tires on their vehicles.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is aware of the incident in question, has viewed the recordings, and is researching the incident.

The Colorado Springs Police Department prides itself on respectful service to our community, and takes very seriously the security of its facilities, officers, employees, and the public.

A formal complaint was initiated and in keeping with routine procedure, will be investigated by members of the Internal Affairs Section. As this is now an active investigation, the Colorado Springs Police Department cannot comment further on this incident at this time.
