Officers responded to the Montebello Gardens Apartments to a possible robbery situation. Upon arrival, a female reported having her keys taken by force by an unknown suspect. A witness was able to identify an apartment that the suspect went into afterwards. Officers were able to contact the suspect in the apartment where he was taken into custody. Officers recovered items of evidence related to the robbery in the apartment.

5300 Block of Austin Bluffs
Location
On 10/03/14 at approximately 6:47PM officers responded to a 1 car accident in the 5300 block of Austin Bluffs Pkwy. The investigation revealed a white 1995 Eagle Talon was northbound on Austin Bluffs in the left lane at a high rate of speed. Witnesses said it appeared the vehicle was racing another vehicle that was also northbound in the center lane.

The driver of the white Eagle Talon lost control, struck the curb of the center median, went airborne striking a tree in the median and shearing the tree off completely. The vehicle continued into an adjacent tree where it came to rest.

The driver was extricated from the vehicle and transported to the hospital. The driver suffered non life threatening injuries as a result of the accident. The driver was admitted to the hospital as a precaution.

The driver was issued traffic citations for several violations including speed contests (racing).

A Ford Expedition was driven by an adult female S/B Austin Bluffs and attempted to swerve to avoid a large U-Haul rental truck entering the intersection. The adult male driver of the U-Haul truck was driving N/B and attempting to make a left turn. The two vehicles collided and the Expedition then struck a signal pole. The female driver had to be extricated from her vehicle by CSFD. Both drivers were transported to local hospitals. The female sustained serious injuries. Further investigation by Major Accident Unit MAU.

Officer Donya Davis was working traffic enforcement in a school zone near Pikes Peak Elementary. She stopped a vehicle for misuse of plates (altered expiration date on license plate) and determined the driver did not have a license, his registration was expired and had no insurance. During a pat down search of the driver, officers recovered a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine and there was residue in the pipe. The residue tested positive for methampethamines. The driver was arrested for the traffic violations as well as the narcotics violation. During an inventory search of the vehicle prior to impounding the vehicle, a 9mm handgun was recovered. Officers arrested a passenger in the vehicle for Possesion of a Weapon by a Previous Offender since he had been convicted of First Degree Assault.

The driver was identified as Martin Hernandez Vargas- 55 yrs old and the passenger was identified as Oscar Acosta-Mendosa - 55 yrs old.

At approximately 1240 hours CSPD responded to a reported stabbing in the 300 block of University Dr. Upon their arrival they located a juvenile male party that had been stabbed in his buttocks. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released for his injuries. There were conflicting statements from witnesses as well as the suspect and the victim as to where the incident occurred as well as what occurred. The suspect was arrested for First Degree Assault and Child Abuse.

Officers responded to a three car non-injury traffic accident in the east bound lanes of Fillmore St just west of Cascade Av. Fire and medical crews also responded to the accident and were the first emergency responders to arrive. To protect the scene, the fire truck blocked the left lane behind the involved vehicles.

During the investigation, one of the vehicles from the accident rolled backward on the grade, striking the front bumper of the fire truck. Neither vehicle was occupied at the time, and the damage was minor to both vehicles.

I-25 at Garden of the Gods Rd
Location
Officers responded to reports of a roll-over taffic crash at I-25 and Garden of the Gods Rd in the north bound lanes.

The investigation determined that a red SUV was going north when it moved left into the center traffic lane. The SUV collided with a blue sedan which was in the center lane. The impact caused the blue car to lose control, strike the center safety barrier and roll. The blue vehicle came to rest on its wheels and the red SUV came to a controlled rest.

The driver and passenger of the blue car were transported to the hospital for non life threatening injuries. The driver of the red SUV was not injured.

The highway was reduced to one lane of traffic for about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Location
Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Astrozon Bl and Academy Bl on a three car traffic accident. At this time, the crash is currently being investigated and there are road closures.

Northbound Academy Blvd at Hancock Blvd is completely shut-down.

Southbound Academy Blvd at Astrozon Blvd there are no left turns onto eastbound Astrozon Blvd.

Eastbound traffic on Astrozon approaching Academy, there is no "through lanes" open, drivers can only go south bound or north bound on Academy.

Westbound traffic on Astrozon approaching Academy, drivers can not make a left turn to go southbound on Academy.

(Most of the accident scene is located in the northbound lanes of Academy Blvd on the southeast side of the roadway)

Due to more vehicles being out on the roadway because of the Christmas Holiday season, this area has become extremely congested with traffic. CSPD is requesting drivers find an alternate route at this time. It is unknown how long the intersection will be shut down.

Investigation Update: The Major Accident team responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. The investigation shows that vehicle #1, A PT Cruiser was southbound on Academy Blvd. approaching Astrozon. The traffic signal for southbound changed to red and a the east bound Astrozon light turned green. A green Dodge Dakota truck began to travel east on Astrozon and was struck by the PT Cruiser which failed to stop for the red light. The Green truck was subsequently pushed into a white Ford truck which was stopped for the light on north bound Academy. A 6 year old passenger in the PT Cruiser sustained injury and was transported from the scene to a local hospital. The driver of the PT Cruiser, Identified as Brenda Hurt, a 22 year old female and aunt to the injured child. Alcohol and drugs may have been a factor in the accident. Charges are pending further investigation
