Traffic Crash - Fatality
Title
I-15 and Fillmore Street
Location
On March 22, 2018, at approximately 2:24 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a two-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 25, just north of Fillmore Street. This crash involved a motorcycle and a pick-up truck pulling a horse trailer. Upon arrival officers found that the motorcycle driver involved in the northbound crash was seriously injured and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Accident Unit responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

Investigation revealed that the motorcycle driver, 77 year old Robert L. Boykin of Colorado Springs, was travelling northbound when he struck the rear end of the horse trailer as the truck was slowing down for the construction zone. There are posted warning signs in this area warning drivers to slow down to 55 mph in the construction zone. Mr. Boykin succumbed on April 3, 2018, to the injuries he suffered during this crash.

Neither excessive speeds, drugs, nor alcohol are considered factors in this crash. No charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the pick-up truck.

This is the ninth traffic related fatality in Colorado Springs, and the first motorcycle fatality, in 2018. At this time last year, there were seven traffic related fatalities.

Anyone with information or is a witness to this investigation is asked to call the Colorado Springs Police Department at (719) 444-7000; or if you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (719) 634-STOP (7867) or 1-800-222-8477.

Suspicious Circumstances
Title
3800 Patrick Dr.
Location
On Thursday, March 29, 2018 Sand Creek Patrol Officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Patrick Dr. to a reported kidnapping. While on the phone, the reporting party had secretly alerted a co-worker to call 911, indicating his daughter and grandchildren had been kidnapped. The reporting party left the scene and was soon contacted by police at a bank nearby. The reporting party was acting erratic and refused to talk to police, while he was still talking on his cellular telephone. Police Officers eventually lost contact with the reporting party. The daughter and grandchildren were located and found to be unharmed during the follow up investigation. The reporting party likely fell victim to a telephone scam, with unknown suspects claiming to have kidnapped his family members, demanding a ransom for their safe return. While the threat carried out during this specific scam is extremely serious and complex in nature, citizens are reminded to call 911 immediately and if at all possible remain stationary in a safe area until contacted by the Police.
