Austin Bluffs/Meadowland

ON 07/15/15 at approximately 0710hrs, CSPD Communications Center received a report of a Hot Air Balloon landing just off the roadway at Austin Bluffs and Meadowland.

CSPD Officers responded and found that the Hot Air Balloon landed on the sidewalk just north of the westbound lanes of Austin Bluffs just west of Meadowland and as the balloon deflated, the fabric blocked the right through lane of traffic for approximately 5-8 minutes while the landing crew worked to move it off the roadway.

The driver reported that wind reports this morning had been optimal for a rural landing northeast of town, but that after take off, no wind was present. The driver was forced to land for safety reasons to avoid power lines in the area. No injuries and no damage were reported.

Officers were dispatched to investigate an attempted carjacking in the 2700 block of Arlington Drive. Officers contacted the victim who reported that he was sitting in his 2004 Nissan Quest with his wife in the parking lot of the apartment complex when an unknown male approached them and opened the driver side door of the vehicle. The male was holding a dark colored handgun and ordered the victim to give him the vehicle. The victim immediately reversed out of parking space and left the parking lot to another location and notified police.
The suspect was described as an unknown race male wearing all dark colored clothing. His head and face were covered by the black ski mask that he was wearing. He was approximately 5'9" to 5'11" tall and had an average build.

No injuries were reported and the suspect was not located.

3600 Meadowland

CSFD station number 10 members and Stetson Hills Police Officers were dispatched to an anonymous call of a possible in progress DUI. CSFD members arrived and found the driver slumped over the wheel of a vehicle with the engine running in the 3600 block of Meadowland Blvd. CSFD personnel arrived on scene first and observed an unresponsive male in the truck. FD personnel secured the vehicle by using wheel chalks in the front and rear of the full sized four wheel drive pick-up truck to prevent an accident. As the responding police officers arrived, the driver woke up and attempted to drive away. At one point the driver was rocking the vehicle back and forth in between the chalks trying to leave the scene against the verbal commands of officers. The driver crashed into the side of the fire truck causing minor damage, so a window was broken out of the truck and 45 year old John Vest of Colorado Springs was pulled from the truck and arrested. He faces multiple charges that include DUI, reckless driving and obstructing police and fire officers. Mr. Vest was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for a medical release prior to being transported to CJC for the aforementioned charges.

200 N. Tejon Street

As originally reported under ETAC #21587, starting in the middle of June of this year, several dumpsters and trash receptacles were set on fire in the downtown area. The fires were contained to the receptacles and did not spread to any adjoining structures. Officers with the Downtown Area Response Team (DART) and the CSPD Bomb/Arson Unit began investigating these arson crimes and were able to locate evidence indicating that 32 year old Sequoya Jones was responsible for several of these fires. During the afternoon of July 13th, DART Officer Winn located Mr. Jones in the 200 block of N. Tejon Street behind a business. Mr. Jones was then taken into custody and CSPD Bomb /Arson Detective Chenoweth responded to assist. Mr. Jones was booked into the Criminal Justice Center on charges to include Second Degree Arson, Fourth Degree Arson and False Reporting.

3700 Hill Drive

On July 13th, 2015, at approximately 11:15AM, Officers were informed that Sergey Bussell was hiding out at a residence in the 3700 block of Hill Drive. Mr. Bussell was wanted for a Felony warrant for Failure to Comply with a narcotics violation. When Officers were walking up to the door they observed Mr. Bussell run through the house and out of the back door. Mr. Bussell was given three canine warnings to stop running, which he ignored. Officer Kelly released canine Broc to apprehend Mr. Bussell. He continued to fight canine Broc while the dog was on the bite, in attempt to escape, striking the Police canine several times in the head. Officers were able to handcuff Mr. Bussell and requested medical attention to treat the injuries he sustained as a result of the canine contact. He was treated for his injuries at Memorial Hospital. In addition to his Felony warrant, he was charged with Obstructing a Peace Officer and Obstructing a Police Dog.

1026 Rice Dr; Willowbrook Apartments

On 07/13/15 at approximately 12:17AM Officer J. Weise and Officer N. Streeter were dispatched to 1026 Rice Dr regarding a disturbance between a male and a female. When officers arrived witnesses pointed out an apartment on the third floor.

When officers contacted the occupants of the apartment a female covered in blood answered the door. A male in the apartment was immediately detained.

The investigation revealed the male suspect had beaten the female victim over the course of an hour or more using his fists and a beer bottle. The female had gotten out of the apartment at one point only to be dragged back into the apartment by the suspect where he continued the beating. The victim said the suspect was upset because she refused to be his girlfriend.

The victim was admitted to the hospital with severe facial injuries. Although the injuries are severe, they do not appear to be life threatening at this time.

The suspect, a 47 year old male, was charged with several charges to include 1st Degree Assault and 2nd Degree Kidnapping. He was transported to CJC.

On 07/11/15, at approximately 2030 hours, members assigned to the Colorado Springs Police Department Gold Hill Patrol Division responded to the 1200 Blk. Florence Ave. to investigate an in progress assault. Upon arrival, Officers discovered two victims that had been physically assaulted with a metal object by their neighbor, later identified as suspect Frederick L. WELLS. The victims were transported to the hospital for evaluation. Both victims suffered injuries determined to be serious bodily injury. The investigation revealed that the incident occurred because of a neighbor dispute between the victims and suspect.

After a lengthy patrol investigation, WELLS was arrested for 1st Degree Assault on 07/12/15.

Update: The investigation into the cause of the accident is still ongoing. However, it is believed that speed and alcohol are factors.

On July 12, 2015, Colorado Springs Police Department responded to a two car crash with injuries in the 2400 block of N. Nevada Avenue. Several vehicle occupants were transported to local area hospitals. The following lane closures are in effect until 0200 hours (estimate): N/B Nevada Ave. between E. Van Buren St. and E. Monroe St. and E/B and W/B E. Jackson St. between N. Tejon St. and N. Weber St.

While using GPS to locate a lost cell phone, Officers contacted three individuals at a 1987 Toyota Camry in a parking lot. The driver of the vehicle ran from the scene and while conducting an inventory search of the vehicle Officers discovered 69 grams of cocaine in rock as well as powder form.

The driver was identified from paperwork inside the vehicle and Officers obtained an arrest warrant for the driver for Unlawful Distribution of a Scedule II Controlled Substance.

The other two males were checked for warrants and were released at the scene.

1200 Willow Bend Circle

On 07/12/15 at 0454 hours officers were dispatched to the 1200 block of Willow Bend Circle in regards to a disturbance. Upon arrival officers contacted two parties that were extremely intoxicated. One party was given a ride to a local motel. The female, 28 year old Alicia Wiedmaier, locked herself in a vehicle and continuously pressed the vehicle’s horn. Wiedmaier eventually unlocked the vehicle and as officers were talking to her she spit on an officer and became verbally aggressive. Wiedmaier was taken into custody and taken to the hospital for a medical clearance. While at the hospital she kicked an Emergency Room nurse in the chest. Wiedmaier was charged with Assault on a Peace Officer, Assault on an Emergency Medical Provider and Disorderly Conduct and taken to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
