On October 3, 2017 at approximately 7:15AM officers from the Gold Hill Division responded to a traffic accident involving a school bus (School District 11) at the intersection of Corona Avenue and E. Brookside Street. The school bus was making its rounds to pick up children for school. The school bus, after failing to yield the right of way, was involved in a traffic accident with another vehicle. The accident occurred at a very low speed and none of the two dozen children on the bus were injured. There were no injuries in the second vehicle. School District 11 officials were advised and responded to the scene to coordinate with parents.

At 9:18 pm on Monday October 2nd; Stetson Hills Officers responded to an apartment complex located at 2420 N. Union Blvd in an attempt to contact and arrest 29 year old Dean Mason for felony menacing. The incident occurred several days before and upon contact with Mr. Mason he refused to allow officers entrance to the residence and would not open his door to have a conversation about what occurred. Officer Retzlaff submitted a search warrant to recover evidence of the crime from the residence and from Mr. Mason’s car. An arrest warrant to seize Mr. Mason for felony menacing was also obtained. At around 1:00 am on October 3rd; the knock and announce warrant was served and Mr. Mason willingly came out of the residence and was arrested without incident. Multiple key items of evidence were located and subsequently Mr. Mason was taken to the criminal justice center.

******* UPDATE: 9:05 PM the Amber Alert has been cancelled. David Lake and William have been located. William is safe. The investigation continues.

The Colorado Spring Police Department is currently attempting to locate David Kevin Lake (a 28 year old resident of Colorado Springs) and his son, William Lake (a three year old). Detectives are interested in speaking with Mr. David Lake regarding an ongoing investigation and checking William’s welfare. At this time, investigators do not have any information about Mr. Lake’s or William’s whereabouts.

Mr. David Lake is described as a white male, 5’08”, 150 pounds, brown hair, and brown eyes. A photograph of Mr. Lake accompanies this release. Mr. David Lake is possibly operating a 2003 blue Toyota Corolla bearing Colorado license plate OBP-131.

William is described as a white male, 3’, 50 pounds, blonde curly hair, blue eyes, and wearing a black and white print button-up shirt, grey pants, and white shoes.

On 10/02/17 at approximately 0732 hours, officers with the Gold Hill Division were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of North Spruce Street regarding a possible shooting victim. Officers arrived on scene as two females ran out the back door. Officers checked the residence for any possible shooting victims. Officers contacted 4 individuals inside the residence however did not locate a shooting victim. During the search for a victim, officers observed drug related paraphernalia throughout the residence. During the investigation, officers located methamphetamine in one of the rooms. Officers placed David Ponti (20) in custody for two felony warrants and the additional charge of Unlawful Possession of a Scheduled II Controlled Substance. A second individual, identified as James Phelps, was taken into custody on a misdemeanor warrant. The investigation is ongoing. The shooting was unfounded at this time.

On September 24, 2017, at 7:29 PM, Sergeant Larry Morgan, a 31 year veteran of the Colorado Springs Police Department assigned to the Patrol Bureau, was driving an unmarked police cruiser northbound on North Academy Boulevard at Dublin Boulevard when he struck a bicyclist who was attempting to cross eastbound Academy Boulevard. The bicyclist was transported to an area hospital for serious injuries sustained in this crash. The officer received minor injuries and immediately administered aid to the bicyclist until medical arrived on scene.

The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Major Accident Unit responded to the scene and conducted an investigation into this incident. Based upon evidence on scene, independent witness interviews, and preliminary speed analysis, it appears that Sergeant Morgan was traveling between 37 and 42 miles per hour. The posted speed limit in this area is 45 miles per hour. Sergeant Morgan was not operating the vehicle in an emergency fashion, nor was he responding to a call for service at the time of the accident.

According to witnesses on scene, the bicyclist entered the intersection while the southbound Academy Boulevard traffic light was red and the northbound light was green. The bicyclist was struck as he was attempting to cross the northbound lanes.

On September 29, 2017, the bicyclist died as a result of the injuries suffered in this accident. The bicyclist has been identified as 30 year old Nicholas Watson, a resident of the Colorado Springs area. His death is the 30th traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs this year, while there were 21 traffic-related deaths at this time last year. This is the third bicyclist to be killed this year in Colorado Springs. There were no bicyclists killed in Colorado Springs in 2016 or 2015.

On 10/01/17, Officer Flynn observed a white Kia Optima travelling at a high rate of speed down I-25. Officer Flynn began following the vehicle in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle turned onto E. Cheyenne Rd where it struck a vehicle head on. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene of the accident on foot, last seen heading east. While Officer Flynn was calling out with the traffic accident, dispatch received information of a home invasion call where a white Kia Optima was stolen from the home owner. One suspect from the home invasion was armed with a knife. The vehicle involved in the accident was the same vehicle taken during the home invasion. Officers began setting up containment in the area and a K-9 search was conducted. A suspect was located hiding in a backyard in the 1300 block of Harrison Rd. The suspect was identified as fleeing from the Kia Optima and also as being one of the parties involved in the home invasion. The suspect was identified as Zachary Barr, a 23 year old male. Barr was arrested for First Degree Burglary, Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft and Menacing. Officers are still working on identifying the second suspect from the home invastion who was identified as “Mike” an approximate 20 year old male. The driver of the vehicle struck by the Kia Optima was not injured.

On the above date and time, the Colorado Springs Police Dept was notified of a robbery in progress. Investigation revealed that a male suspect entered the business armed with a knife and demanded money. I struggle ensued between the suspect and victim, during which the victim sustained non-life threatening injuries. The suspect left the business with an unknown amount of money. A K9 track was attempted but was unsuccessful.

The suspect is described a Hispanic or light skinned black male, approximately 20 years of age, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray shorts, and tan colored combat boots.

At the above date and time the Colorado Springs Police Communication’s Section received a call regarding a traffic collision in the 1700 block of South 8th St. After officers arrived on scene it was determined the operator of traffic unit number 1 turned left in front of traffic unit number 2. Multiple people were transported to a local hospital for treatment. It was later determined one of the passengers suffered serious bodily injury. Alcohol is suspected to have been a factor in the collision. Both northbound lanes were blocked and traffic was diverted around the area of the collision.
Detectives from the CSPD Major Accident Unit responded to assist with the investigation.

Officers were dispatched to a residence in the 900 block of Teal Court to investigate a stabbing. On arrival, officers contacted two males inside the residence, one of whom had been stabbed in the arm and in the leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non life threatening injuries.
The investigation revealed that the two males were friends and were playing a video game inside the residence and began to argue about the game. The verbal argument escalated into a physical disturbance and during that disturbance the victim was stabbed.
The suspect was identified as 27 year old David Seeley, Jr. He was charged with Second Degree Assault and was later transported to the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

At approximately 11:24pm officers responded to the area of Austin Bluffs Pkwy and Siferd Blvd. in response to a call for service regarding a rollover traffic accident. The driver of the vehicle, a 26 year old male, attempted to flee the scene. Passersby kept the driver at the location until officers could arrive in the area. The driver repeatedly attempted to flee and resist efforts to place him into custody. One officer sustained minor injuries as a result of the altercation with the driver. The driver will be charged with several traffic related charges as a result of the crash, as well as resisting arrest.
