On Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 1:30 AM, members of the Police Department’s Downtown Area Response Team (DART) were alerted to a male brandishing a weapon in the 000 block of South Tejon Street. When Officers Juliano and Ireland arrived in the area, they saw the suspect, Michael Bartley (23 years old) quickly walking north on the sidewalk. Eventually Mr. Bartley stopped in the alley after trying to jump a short retaining wall where he was taken into custody. At this time a revolver was located in one of Mr. Bartley’s pockets along with a second semi-automatic handgun under a car in the adjacent parking lot. Mr. Bartley was found to have a prior felony conviction, and he was charged with Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender.

Title
Palmer Park Bl/Tweed
Location
On the afternoon of July 7th at approximately 1445 hrs, Officer DL Hopkins was conducting traffic enforcement on westbound Palmer Park Blvd near N. Union Blvd. During that enforcement, Officer Hopkins stopped a silver Chevy Trailblazer for speeding and contacted the driver who provided a fictitious Mexican driver’s license. When the driver also gave officers a fictitious address, suspicions were raised and the driver was questioned further which led to officers obtaining consent to search the vehicle.

Officers located $1946.25 in the vehicle for which the driver could not provide a satisfactory explanation. Absent any other evidence, the driver was issued a summons for his traffic charges (speeding, no license, uninsured) and released from the scene. The vehicle was impounded for further investigation and VNI detectives were apprised of the details of the stop.

The following morning, detectives from Metro VNI enlisted the help of Officer B. Kelly and K9 Broc to conduct a scan of the Trailblazer. Broc immediately alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. Based on those findings, VNI detectives obtained a search warrant for the vehicle. During the execution of that search, an additional $2000 and 16.9 ounces (just over a pound) of heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine were recovered.

Officer Hopkins is to be commended for his tenacity in following his intuition during an otherwise “routine” stop; a fact which led to the seizure of one vehicle, nearly $4000 in cash, and over a pound of illegal narcotics.
