Traffic Crash
Title
Platte Ave. at Tia Juana St.
Location
On Friday, 10/10/2014 at approximately 2233 hours, CSPD received a 911 call reporting a traffic accident with injuries, near the intersection of Platte Ave. and Circle Dr. When Patrol Officer arrived they learned the following information. A red sedan occupied two times had been eastbound on Platte Ave., and was making a U-turn at Tia Juana St. A silver sedan occupied four times was westbound on Platte Ave., and struck the red sedan as it was making the U-turn. All four occupants of the silver sedan were transported to local area hospitals with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Both occupants of the red sedan were later transported to local area hospitals as a precaution. Private property and city property were both damaged while both vehicles were coming to uncontrolled points of rest after the collision. Evidence on scene supports that excessive speed, alcohol, and illegal narcotics may all have been contributing factors to the accident. The CSPD Major Accident Unit (MAU) was notified, and did respond to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Westbound Platte Ave. is currently shut down to vehicle traffic from Arawanna to Juanita. This ETACS will be updated when the roadway is reopened.

**UPDATE** as of 0520 hours on 10/11/2014 westbound Platte Ave. has be reopened.

UPDATE: CSPD is no longer on Accident Alert Status as of 10/09/14, 6:25 pm.

The Colorado Springs Police Department is on Accident Alert status as of October 9, 2014 at 12:50PM due to road conditions. Drivers are reminded if they are involved in a traffic accident with no fatality or injury requiring medical attention, no driver involved is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, all drivers are present with license, registration and insurance information, and no damage to public property such as a street sign or utility pole has occurred, drivers should exchange their information and follow the procedure for completing a counter (cold) report. When damage to any vehicle requires a wrecker, a counter report can still be made providing the previous criteria is met. Drivers can either pick up a traffic accident report form at any of the police department substations or they can go on line at Springsgov.com, go to the CSPD homepage and select “report a minor traffic accident” for instructions. Drivers should also be reminded to take the appropriate steps to avoid being involved in a traffic accident during adverse weather and road conditions. Drivers should check road and travel conditions before heading out and leave more time to get to their destination. Drivers need to travel at a safe speed for the conditions and leave an increased and safe following distance from the vehicle in front of them. Drivers need to avoid standing water and flooded roadways/intersections.
