Colorado Springs
Location
April 13, 2017 {Release at Will}

With the warmer temperatures, the Colorado Springs Police Department encourages the community to enjoy our parks, recreation, and trail systems throughout the city. The police department would like to offer some crime prevention and safety tips to keep in mind while you enjoy the beauty of our region. As more people get out and enjoy the outdoors, there is an increase in crimes of opportunity. One of these is motor vehicle break-ins.

Leave your valuables at home when going to visit a park and only take what you will carry with you when you leave your car. This includes purses and wallets. Put your driver’s license, registration, and insurance card in a pocket before leaving for the park. Sometimes thieves will watch parking lots and trail heads in these areas to see if you tuck a purse or briefcase under the seat or lock items in the trunk. Even putting these items in the trunk is not always a safe place as most new cars have interior buttons to open trunks or pass through areas in the rear seat. Thieves will look under coats and blankets to see if there are hidden valuables. To a thief a gym bag, backpack, or other container might hold a laptop or other valuables.

Don’t keep spare keys in your car. Thieves will use these to steal the car. Make sure to lock your car. Do not leave items containing personal identifying information in the car. Items such as driver’s license, registration, insurance card, ID cards for kids, and Military ID all contain valuable information for identity thieves.

When you go for a hike, carry a cellular phone with you. This is an excellent way to summons help if someone is injured or you observe something suspicious.

Enjoy the beauty of our city, but start smart and stay aware.

Location
On the above date and time, Officers from the Sand Creek Division were dispatched to a residence in the 5100 block of Airport Rd. to investigate a domestic disturbance. Officers were unable to establish probable cause for an arrest in the disturbance. However, during their investigation, they learned that the male half, identified as 45 year old Marino Scott, was possibly under the influence of narcotics and may be in possession of a firearm. Mr. Scott left the scene prior to the officers’ arrival and was believed to have taken the contraband with him. Officers located a secondary location where Mr. Scott may have hidden the guns and drugs and were in the process of obtaining a search warrant for it. During that time, Mr. Scott returned to the scene and attempted to remove items from the location. Mr. Scott failed to obey officers’ commands and was subsequently tased and taken into custody. At the conclusion of the investigation, Mr. Scott was found to be in possession of multiple firearms, including some that were stolen. Mr. Scott was charged with Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender. Members of the ATF gun task force responded and will pursue federal firearms charges against Mr. Scott.
