Financial Crimes was assigned 5 identity theft cases all involving suspect Armando Gallegos, 32 years old, manufacturing checks using others’ account information and then passing the checks at local businesses. On 8/23/17, patrol officers contacted Gallegos on a traffic stop and arrested him on an active want for one of those cases. In a search of the vehicle, officers located several forged ID’s, checks, and credit cards, along with a firearm and narcotics. FCU and postal inspectors interviewed Gallegos who admitted to stealing mail in Black Forest and Colorado Springs and to altering and manufacturing checks. A search of Gallegos’ residence located an ID theft lab, to include laptop computers, printers, altered IDs and checks, and garbage bags full of unopened mail. There are an estimated 100+ victims. He has been arrested on 7 ID theft cases in this pattern.

On 9-21-2017 at about 01:03AM officers from the CSPD Gold Hill Patrol Division shift 3 were dispatched to 503 South Nevada Ave the 7/11 in order to investigate an armed robbery. The victim told investigating officers that parties unknown attempted to complete a shoplifting. When confronted by the clerk, a female suspect said she had a knife. The clerk pulled her box cutter in self-defense. The female suspect fled the scene and never showed a weapon. Suspects were three white females and one white male. The suspects fled in a vehicle that was later determined to be stolen. No one was injured, no arrests at this time. Investigation is continuing.

On the above date and time the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a two car crash near the intersection of E. Platte Av. and N. Chelton Rd. Responding officers found that the crash was serious and the Major Accident Unit was summoned to the scene.

Investigation revealed a silver Maserati was traveling westbound at an excessive speed on E. Platte Av. when it struck a dark colored Dodge pick-up truck which was also traveling westbound. The force of the impact caused the pick-up truck to flip onto its roof. The crash resulted in serious injuries to two of the occupants in the pick-up truck. The third occupant suffered minor injuries. The Maserati driver, 45 year old Seth B. Vanderiet of Colorado Springs, was apprehended a short distance away after he attempted to flee the scene. Mr. Vanderiet was not injured.

Ultimately, Mr. Vanderiet was charged with DUID, Vehicular Assault, Reckless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury, and several other charges. He was transported and booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.

All lanes of traffic were re-opened at approximately 2:35 AM.

On the above date and time officers of the Sand Creek Division were dispatched to a reported traffic crash in the 3200 block of E Platte Ave. Investigation revealed two vehicles were involved in the crash, with the occupants of one vehicle sustaining injuries. The investigation is continuing at this time and westbound Platte Ave is shut down at Chelton Rd. An update will be sent out when Platte is opened to traffic.

On the above date and time officers of the Sand Creek Division were dispatched to the intersection of S Powers Bl and Astrozon Bl on a reported traffic crash. Investigation showed a vehicle traveling southbound turned left in front of northbound traffic, causing a two car crash. The investigation is continuing at this time. Northbound Powers is closed at Astrozon Bl, with traffic being diverted east and westbound on Astrozon. Eastbound Astrozon is closed at Powers as well. An update will be sent out when the roadway is opened to traffic.

On 9-20-2017 at about 1am Gold Hill Officers were dispatched to the area of 100 East Kiowa for a hit in run crash involving multiple cars and a pedestrian. Upon arrival officers found a black Kia sedan struck a white Subaru and a black Volvo. The involved vehicles were found on scene however the occupants and the pedestrian were not located. The Kia and the Volvo received heavy crash damage. The pedestrian who left the scene and was later found at a local hospital with minor injury. Witnesses on scene described seeing numerous people flee the scene. The registered owner of vehicle number one has been located and the investigation is still on going. The investigation indicates no one received SBI and there is no risk to the public at this time. Three vehicles total damaged and one City Parking meter will need repair.

On September 19, 2017, at approximately 2:44 AM, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a pick-up truck near the Security/Widefield area. The truck failed to yield to deputies and a short pursuit was initiated. That pursuit was called off due to high speeds. The driver of the pick-up truck continued his reckless behavior at which time deputies, with the assistance of Fountain Police Department officers, reengaged the pursuit and were able to stop the vehicle in a cul-de-sac where shots were fired, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in serious, but stable condition. No deputies or officers were injured during the shots being fired; however, officers and deputies sustained minor injuries during the pursuits.

The deputies involved have been placed on routine administrative leave in accordance with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office policy.

As a result of Senate Bill 15-219, Concerning Measures to Provide Additional Transparency to Peace Officer-Involved Shootings, the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Violent Crimes Section, Homicide Unit, responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. This is an active criminal investigation. All individuals are accounted for.

On 09/18/17 a customer at the Water Works Carwash was waiting for his vehicle. A suspect approached an employee of the carwash and advised the worker that the vehicle belonged to him and he was in a hurry. The suspect then jumped in the vehicle, a black Infinity SUV and left the area. As the suspect was fleeing the area he struck a vehicle that was legally parked by the new protected bike lane on S. Weber St. The suspect continued to drive northbound but the vehicle was too damaged to be driven any further. The suspect then fled on foot, last seen heading westbound through a business. Suspect was described as a Hispanic or white male, 5’7” medium build. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and a green hat. Witnesses stated the suspect was bleeding from his face. Officers checked the area for the suspect but were unable to locate him. No other parties were injured as a result of the accident.

On 09/17/17 Officer J. Scott was in the parking lot of Jersey Mike’s, located in the 500 block of S. 8th St. Officer Scott received a hit that a vehicle in the parking lot was stolen. Officer Scott began following the vehicle airing the direction of travel to responding officers. Officers located the vehicle in a townhome parking lot just south of the Gold Hill Mesa community. Officers observed 3 parties exiting the vehicle and upon contact the driver fled the area on foot. 2 of the parties were detained and a perimeter was set up. A K-9 track was conducted and the driver was located in the Gold Hill Mesa area. The driver was identified as Matthew Myers a 22 year old male and he was charged with motor vehicle theft. Chase Cordova a 21 year old male and passenger in the car was served and released on the charge of criminal possession of a financial device. The third passenger was identified and released.

On September 17, 2017 officers from the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region requested assistance from the Colorado Springs Police Department in executing a search warrant to seize a dangerous pit bull which was located inside of an apartment at the Palmer Park Apartments in the 1200 block of E. San Miguel St. The pit bull had been involved in numerous incidents where it was unrestrained and had attacked other dogs around the apartment complex. During one incident the pit bull had bitten another dog owner on the hand during an attempt to keep the pit bull from attacking his dog. The tenants of the apartment had ignored and avoided multiple contact attempts by the Humane Society officers.

At approximately 6:20 PM officers from the Stetson Hills Division responded along with the Humane Society officers to execute the search warrant. The occupants of the apartment also ignored and did not comply with CSPD officer’s commands to exit the apartment. Forced entry was made and five adults were located inside the apartment along with two dogs, one of which was the wanted pit bull. The pit bull resisted but was successfully seized by the Humane Society officers using their restraint equipment and did not appear to be injured. No injuries to involved officers or citizens were reported.

The two tenants of the apartments were served and released for Obstructing a Police Officer. One of the tenants was also charged with Unlawful Ownership of a Dangerous Animal. The pit bull remains in the custody of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region.

On Sunday, 09/17/2017 at 2:04pm, the Colorado Springs Police Department Dispatch Center received notification that a bank had just been robbed. The US Bank, located at 9225 N. Union Blvd., inside the King Soopers was robbed for an undisclosed amount of cash. The lone unknown race male entered the bank and produced a note demanding cash. The teller gave the suspect cash and he exited the bank. He was last scene on foot inside the King Soopers. Robbery detectives were paged out and responded to assume the investigation.
