5/15/2013 E-MailFrom: Kleinheitz, Daniel [mailto:dkleinheitz@simplexgrinnell.com] Sent: Tuesday, May 14, 2013 9:22 AM To: Withee, Doreen E Subject: RE: Memorial Hospital- East Tower Damper Detectors- 5 Device Letter Sorry Steve never got back to you on this.. Scope of work is not clear as to whether we are dealing with duct detectors or dampers. It sounds from your response, we are dealing with smoke dampers. The dampers which are remaining are a fire/smoke damper. We need to remove the duct detector within the duct work that samples the air after the damper but before it is supplied into the room. A smoke detector will be installed within Lactation Room 3N3151 to sample the air as the duct detector did do not restrict air flow or damper closure as the duct detector currently does. Currently there is already a smoke detector within Patient Room 3N3143 which will serve the same purpose. Are these dampers located at fire/smoke barrier penetrations? We need to know what type of wall is being penetrated to require the damper in the first place, so we can reference the correct section of the codes.. Are we dealing with a Fire Wall, Fire Barrier, Smoke Barrier, or Fire Partition or none of the above? I had my tech go out there and confirm with the hospital that the wall is a fire partition. The referenced sections within the scope of work do not exist. There is no section 716 of the IMC. If you were intending to reference 2009 IBC 716.3.2.1 #5, regarding total detection then you must also include the area above the ceiling. You are right, I'm referencing 716 in IBC but also (which is the same reference) 607.5.4.1 in IMC. Item 5 is the code I'm intending to adhere to as the RTU has duct detection and areas served have smoke detection and/or duct detection at smoke damper locations. I hope this helps. : Daniel J Kleinheitz / Designer/ Project Manager / SimplexGrinnell Tel: +1-719-799-2156 / Fax: +1-719-574-1253 / Cell: +1-719-200-4850 915 Valley Street / Colorado Springs, CO, 80915 / USA dkleinheitz@simplexgrinnell.com / www.simplexgrinnell.com From: Withee, Doreen E [mailto:DWithee@springsgov.com] Sent: Monday, May 13, 2013 10:30 AM To: Kleinheitz, Daniel Subject: FW: Memorial Hospital- East Tower Damper Detectors- 5 Device Letter No response was received - letter has been denied. Scope of work is not clear as to whether we are dealing with duct detectors or dampers. If dampers, are they fire/smoke dampers or just smoke dampers? Are these located at fire/smoke barrier penetrations? Are they at air transfer grills? The referenced sections within the scope of work do not exist. If you are using total detection as indicated in IBC 716.3.2.1 #5, then you must also include the area above the ceiling.
