AttentionBATTERIES SYSTEMS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 608 OF THE IFC 2009: 1. The batteries shall have venting caps to relieve pressure, which is often Hydrogen gas. 2. VRLA or other sealed non-venting caps shall be equipped with resealing flame arresting safety caps. 3. Lithium Ion and Lithium metal polymer batteries shall not require vented caps. 4. VRLA and Lithium -ion and lithium metal polymer battery systems shall be provided with a listed device or other approved method to preclude, detect or control Thermal runaway. 5. Battery systems shall be permitted in the same room or area as they equipment they support. 6. Battery systems shall be housed in a non-combustible locked cabinet or enclosure to prevent unauthorized personnel from accessing the system. 7. Enclosures of stationary battery systems shall comply with the IBC. When stationary batteries are installed in separate equipment room accessible only to authorized personnel, they shall be permitted to be installed on an open rack for ease of maintenance. 8. Spill control and a means of spill response shall be provided. 9. An approved method of control and cleaning up the spill shall be provided. 10. Ventilation shall be provided in accordance with the IMC. Ventilation systems shall ventilate the floor area of the room at a minimum of 1 cfm/sq. ft. and shall be provided on a continuous basis. 11. The ventilation system shall be designed to limit the maximum concentration of Hydrogen 1% of the total volume of the room. 12. Temperature Control shall be provided to maintain safe operating conditions of the batteries. 13. Signs and placards shall be appropriately posted. 14. Seismic protection shall be provided for the battery storage system in accordance with the IBC. 15. Approved smoke detection shall be provided.
AttentionATTENTION ATTENTION 608.6.3 Mechanical ventilation systems shall be supervised at an approved central proprietary or remote station service or shall initiate an audible and visual signal at a constantly attended on-site location. AttentionEquipment, machinery, and required detection and alarm systems associated with the use, storage, or handling of hazardous materials shall be listed or approved. This requirement is subject to verification at the time of the Hazardous materials Inspection prior to signing the Fire Final. THIS INCLUDES THE BATTERY & VENTILATION SYSTEMS.
FYILabeling - An NFPA 704 compliant Hazard Placard is required for each pedestrian entry door rooms containing hazardous materials in excess of the exempt amounts (this door could be interior or exterior) and all such doors shall be included. The minimum size of the Hazard Placard shall be 15" by 15". This requirement is subject to verification at the time of the Hazardous materials Inspection prior to signing the Fire Final. Doors into electrical equipment rooms or buildings containing stationary battery systems shall be provided with approved signs. The signs shall state that: 1. The room contains energized battery systems. 2. The room contains energized electrical circuits. 3. The battery electrolyte solutions, where present, are corrosive liquids.
