This service station is an example of the practice of major gasoline brands locating neighborhood gas stations on corners adjacent to major arterial streets. It was built in 1956, and was first occupied by the Nelson-Griswold "66" Service Station. Originally a plain rectangular building, the gull wing canopy supported by an 'oil derrick' pole was added in the 1960's. The design was intended to enhance recognition of the Phillips 66 service stations from highways, and is reflective of the Exaggerated Modern style. The gabled roof on the main building and brick veneer may have been added at the same time. Locally significant.
