This house is significant for its architecture, which reflects the city's late 19th century domestic construction and design. The pre-1895 dwelling displays influences of the Gothic Revival style units steeply pitched gables, decorative verge boards and gable ornament, and tall windows with decorative crowns with drip molds. Other notable features of the house include the variety of windows and decorative glass, the side porch with spindle frieze and supports and the two-story bay window with cut-away corners.

The earliest known residents at this address were James H. and Ada A. Gardner; Mr. Gardner was a bookkeeper, mining broker and investor. By 1931, the structure had been turned into a furnished apartment building. Locally significant.
