City of Colorado Springs / City Engineering / HES Projects / Fountain and Chelton Intersection Improvements

Fountain and Chelton Intersection Improvements

Project Description: The Fountain Boulevard and Chelton Road intersection configuration doesn't meet current design standards and has been a high accident location. In 2004, the City applied for and received a competitive, federally-funded Hazard Elimination and Safety grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation. The project is currently under construction with right-of-way purchases nearly complete.
Benefits of the finished project will include improved safety for vehicles and pedestrians, better traffic flow, and reduced congestion.

Improvements:

  • Dual left turn lanes from eastbound Fountain Boulevard to northbound Chelton Road
  • Right turn lane from westbound Fountain Boulevard to northbound Chelton Road
  • Right turn lane from southbound Chelton Road to westbound Fountain Boulevard
  • Sidewalk and pedestrian ramp improvements to meet ADA requirements
  • Extensive drainage improvements were completed in April 2009.

Estimated project schedule: Construction on the intersection improvements is expected to continue in May/June 2009.
