Ride Your Bike To Work Day
Mountain Metro Rides organizes Bike to Work Day activities each June to encourage bicycling for personal and community health, alternative transportation, recreation, and sustainability. This year marked the 20th annual Metro Rides Bike to Work Day, and was be celebrated on Wednesday, June 26th.
RESULTS FOR METRO RIDES 20th ANNUAL BIKE TO WORK DAY HAVE BEEN TABULATED AND THE WINNERS ARE!!
The results for the team challenges and one-on-one challenges are in, and there were a couple of very close races. Congratulations to each of the winning teams and to all that participated in this event. The winners are listed below.
Extra Small Company: Kaman Precision Products with 57% participation
Small Company: Empirical Testing Corporation with 44% participation
Medium Company: VMware with 24% participation
Large Company: LSI Corporation with 17% participation
Extra Large Company: Atmel with 2% participation
Results are based on the number of employees each company has and on how many riders participated. It’s easy to see that an extra small company (fewer than 25 employees) has quite an advantage over the extra large company (greater than 1,000 employees) in getting participation. That is why there are several categories to keep this friendly competition on a level playing field.
Military Challenge Cup: Air Force wins over Army once again. The trophy will be awarded to the JPPSO for the 2nd year in a row.
Wheels of Gold Cup: Colorado Springs Utilities wins over The City of Colorado Springs by one rider, so the trophy will be awarded to CSU. El Paso County also participated in this challenge.
Public Safety Cup: The Colorado Springs Police Department beats the Colorado Springs Fire Department for the 3rd straight year. Of course our fire department has been extremely busy the past 2 years fighting fires. Hopefully next year we will have fewer fires and the Fire Department will have more time to participate.
Community Excellence Award for Team Spirit: This award is presented each year to the team that demonstrates true team spirit. This year the Community Excellence trophy will be awarded to the Colorado Springs Fire Department. In 2012 Bike to Work Day had to be cancelled due to the Waldo Canyon Fire, and this year the Black Forest Fire again threatened the event. Due to the extreme efforts of our firefighters, the event was held as scheduled.
Community Excellence Award for Most Kids on Bikes: This award is presented each year to the organization or group that has the largest number of children participate and ride their bikes to the Pioneers Museum. Once again this trophy will be awarded to the kids at Meadows Park Community Center. This year they had 24 kids make the ride from the community center down to the Pioneers Museum, with a police escort on bike.
