Victim: Artie Borden
Victim: Artie Borden

File Number: 80-10474

The Victim: Artie Borden, 83 years old, died on 6/10/80 from injuries he sustained after having been assaulted.

The Crime: On the evening of 05/28/80, a patrol officer responded to an emergency call in the 200 block of East Fountain. Upon arriving, he found Artie Borden severely beaten and in a semi-conscious state. Mr. Borden was unable to identify his attacker to the officer. He was transported to St Francis Hospital where he died from his injuries on 06/10/80.  For nearly two decades Mr. Borden, a World War I veteran, ran a rooming house for the poor. He would provide a meal and a temporary place to stay for those dispossessed and downtrodden. The tenant who called the police said he overheard what sounded like an argument between Mr. Borden and another unknown individual.  When he went to investigate, he discovered Mr. Borden beaten and lying on his kitchen floor.

The Investigation: Detectives interviewed current and previous tenants and followed up on numerous leads regarding individuals that interacted with Mr. Borden during the days preceding the assault. This case remains an open investigation.

The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year.
