City of Colorado Springs / Emergency Management / Weather Information / Local Weather Hazards / Tornadoes

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. Wind speeds can exceed 250 miles per hour. Tornadoes, although rare in Colorado Springs, are fairly common in eastern parts of El Paso County, such as Falcon and Limon. According to the National Weather Services, over 160 tornadoes were reported in El Paso County between 1995 and 2008.
When a tornado is coming, you have only a short amount of time to make life-or-death decisions. Advance planning and quick response are the keys to surviving a tornado.
A tornado watch is issued by the National Weather Service when tornadoes are possible in your area. Remain alert for approaching storms. Remind family members where the safest places within your home are located, and listen to the radio or television for further developments.
A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Take shelter immediately.
