Police Officer Assaulted

Tuesday, August 10, 2010 3:45 PM [RELEASE AT WILL]:

At approximately 9:00 AM this morning members of the Colorado Springs Police Department Homeless Outreach Team were in the area of Cimarron and I-25 assisting a local nonprofit with cleaning up the trail areas.  Officer M.J. Thomson, Officer Iverson, and Officer McCormack contacted an individual, later identified as 20 year old Jonathan Patzel, who was camping under the bridge.  Officers were attempting to identify the party and gather information to best help him.   Mr. Patzel initially gave officers a different name and when they could not find information on the name provided they began investigating further.  During the investigation Mr. Patzel pushed Officer Thomson   causing him to fall backwards.  As Officer Thomson fell he struck his head on a metal beam causing him to lose consciousness and resulting in two deep lacerations to his head.

Mr. Patzel continued to be aggressive toward Officers.  Mr. Patzel would not comply with orders from the officers to stop.  Officer Iverson then tased the suspect which temporarily incapacitated Mr. Patzel and allowed officers to put handcuffs on him.  Following the incident, Officer Thomson was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for two lacerations to his head.  Both lacerations required staples and at this point Officer Thomson is expected to make a full recovery.  Due to his injuries, it is unknown when Officer Thomson will be able to return to duty.  The Violent Crimes Unit did assist with the investigation.  Mr. Patzel was charged with Second Degree Assault on a Peace Officer, which is a Class 4 felony.  A photo of Mr. Patzel accompanies this release.
