Composting is Cool

Here’s some estimates for how long these items take to break down over time:

Banana Peel: 3-4 weeks

Cardboard: 2 months

Tinned Steel Can: 50 years

Aluminum Can: 200-500 years (But if recycled, it can be reused within 6 weeks!)

Disposable Diapers: 500 years (closer to 25-100 years)

Plastic Bags : 20-1000 years (most will be crumbled or incinerated)

Plastic Jug: 1 million years (polymers break down within 100 years)

Glass : 1 million years (silica is a stable molecule)

Styrofoam: 1 million years (powdered grains within 100 years)

You can significantly reduce the amount of waste you send to the landfill by simply composting.  By separating out your organic waste, you will not only have less in the trash can every week, but you can recover those nutrients to be used on your houseplants and in your yard.  See the City’s page on Composting for more information and to get started today!
