City of Colorado Springs / City Engineering / Permits, Applications and Fees / Excavation Permits

Excavation Permits

  • Current Excavation Permit Fee Schedule

  • Excavation permits are to be obtained for any work done in the public right-of-way and work must be performed by a licensed, insured, and bonded excavation contractor.  General contractor licenses do not cover work in the right-of-way.

  • Applications for excavation permits are available from City Engineering Inspections located at 2880 International Circle, Suite 200-1. This office is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. The phone number is (719) 385-5977.

  • Or, they may be purchased online by clicking here.

  • Upon receipt of the application, City Inspections will usually issue an excavation permit within 72 hours (not including weekends and holidays).

  • A Barricade Plan is required to receive a permit.  A plan can be obtained from a book available from Traffic Engineering.  The phone number is (719) 385-5908.

  • The permit and Barricade Plan are to be on site during the excavation.  Non-compliance could result in the site being shut down.
