North & South Douglas Creek Projects
Current Status: City Engineering has received bids for the first two (of four) repair and reconstruction projects. The contractor will begin this work by the beginning of November 2013. The third and fourth repair and reconstruction projects were advertised on September 27, 2013. The bids will be opened on October 24, 2013.
Background: The Waldo Canyon Wildfire of 2012 dramatically changed the characteristics of the drainage basins that feed North and South Douglas Creeks. These two creeks have experienced greater amounts of sediment and debris loads during hydrologic events since the wildfire in addition to greater flow rates of storm runoff. These factors make the already aging and deteriorating channels even more susceptible to damage.
City Council appropriated funding to begin work on these channels May 14th2013. Since that time, City Engineering hired two consultants to review all available documents associated with these two channels and performed an extensive inspection of the over 6 miles of concrete lined channel.
