North & South Douglas Creek Projects
Current Status: Aztec General Contractors, LLC; CMS, Inc.; and DRX Enterprises, LLC have completed the work that City Engineering advertised in the Fall of 2013. Cumulatively, these four contracts removed over 1,500 CY of sediment from the channels. Over 4,300 CY of reinforced concrete was placed, replacing over 2 miles of concrete channel.
Background: The Waldo Canyon Wildfire of 2012 dramatically changed the characteristics of the drainage basins that feed North and South Douglas Creeks. These two creeks have experienced greater amounts of sediment and debris loads during hydrologic events since the wildfire in addition to greater flow rates of storm runoff. These factors make the already aging and deteriorating channels even more susceptible to damage.
City Council appropriated funding to begin work on these channels May 14th2013. City Engineering hired Matrix Design Gorup and Wilson & Company to review all available documents associated with these two channels and perform an extensive inspection of the over 6 miles of concrete lined channel. MDG and W&C then assembled four packages of repair and reconstruction work that was advertised in the Fall of 2013.
