After graduating from high school in Buffalo, N.Y., Joel attended the United States Air Force Academy graduating in 1992 with Academic and Military distinction, and a bachelor’s degree in Astronautical Engineering.

After graduating, Joel married Anita Laydon and moved to Lubbock, Texas, where he attended Undergraduate Pilot Training then went on to earn his master’s in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech.

Joel and his wife moved to Colorado Springs in 1998, when he began his last active duty military assignment as an assistant professor at the Air Force Academy.

Currently, Joel is a lieutenant colonel in the Colorado Air National Guard and a MD-11 pilot for FedEx Express.

In addition to his military service, Joel served on the Colorado Springs Airport Advisory Commission for nine years, and served as vice-chairman his final year on the commission.

Joel and Anita have four children attending school in Academy School District 20 where Joel regularly volunteers.

Joel enjoys spending time with his family, shooting at a local range, running, hiking and biking.
