The Vista of Pikes Peak reminds us why we need to protect our environment through simple acts such as recycling.
City of Colorado Springs / Environmental Sustainability / Cascade Smartscape Challenge

The Cascade Smartscape

The median on Cascade Avenue between Pikes Peak Avenue and Colorado Avenue will be redesigned in summer 2012. The demonstration’s goal is to enhance our community and beautify a central location in downtown Colorado Springs while demonstrating environmental and financial sustainability.

Implementation of the winning design will be paid for by Xerox’s community donation of $20,000, a public-private partnership.  Xerox’s $21,000 donation is “value added” to their contract with the City of Colorado Springs to provide print management services for the organization. “Value added” partnerships are something the City’s Contracting Office looks for from companies doing business with the City.

The City of Colorado Springs sought talent to compete in a Cascade SmartScape Challenge. The competition recruited professionals to help create a streetscape design concept for the future.  The winning design, Connections: Inspired by the past……Designed for the future, was created by Cache Landmark Landscaping. They will receive $1,000 from Xerox and be recognized by on-site signage. Construction is expected in Summer 2012. Some design adjustments are expected as the design goes through public and internal review.

The shapes and forms for Connections were inspired by patterns found on Ute Indian ceramics and tapestries. The form provides a palette for changing colors, materials, and textures. The intention is to provide a connection to the past with the sustainable design application of low water, recycled materials, and low maintenance, providing a legacy for the future. Some City resources, such as mulch made from Forestry Division waste and salvaged rocks, will be reused in this project.
