North Nevada Avenue Corridor Improvement Plan

The section of North Nevada Avenue from Lilac Street to Interstate 25 was, prior to the late 1950s, part of the highway to Denver and main route into downtown Colorado Springs from the north. Many roadside motels, gas stations, and restaurants flanked this important roadway. More than forty years later, this stretch of North Nevada Avenue is still commercial with a mix of retail and business establishments. Though still heavily utilized, the corridor is lacking in pedestrian, bike and transit facilities, as well as a cohesive character.

Recognizing the past, present, and future importance of North Nevada Avenue to the community, the City of Colorado Springs initiated an improvement study for the corridor. The corridor improvement plan includes long-term transportation planning elements, such as potential shared access roads and modified access to North Nevada as properties aggregate and redevelop. This project considers safety, traffic flow, and multimodal improvements and is known as the North Nevada Corridor Improvement Plan.

Other goals of the Plan are to create a "gateway" through the corridor by implementing urban design standards developed through the planning process. The corridor is already changing, as the high speed interchange with Interstate 25 has been reconstructed as an urban interchange with improved connectivity to the arterial roadway network. Improving the aesthetics of the corridor and maintaining traffic flow will help support the continued revitalization of the corridor and improve the viability of the existing businesses. The latest version of the plan may be found in the document below.
