The Austrian pine is a very hardy tree able to withstand city or seaside conditions, heat and drought, and clay and alkaline soils. Groupings work particularly well as a windbreak and can reduce heating costs when planted to the north of a building to block winter winds. Austrian pines grows to 60 feet with a 20 to 40-foot branch spread. The Austrian pine improves air quality and is quick to sequester larger than average quantities of carbon. Large trees such as the Austrian Pine can decrease energy use when planted to shade the east and west windows of a home or business. Avoid planting these trees along south-facing windows in order to keep your windows open to winter sun to reduce the need for heat in the winter. The Austrian pine grows in zones 4 to 7.
