The Victim: Mary Margaret Caldwell, 61 years of age.


The Crime: On 12/18/1980, Colorado Springs Police officers were dispatched to 812 South Meade Ave., Apt #201, Colorado Springs, Colorado, reference a dead body. Officers found the body of Mary Margaret Caldwell on the floor of her apartment. It was apparent that the victim had been sexually assaulted.


The Investigation: The crime scene investigation revealed that the suspect entered the second floor apartment by climbing onto the second floor balcony and kicking in the balcony door.


The El Paso County Coroner indicated that Mary Margaret Caldwell's death was attributed to cardio pulmonary failure and it is possible that the sexual assault contributed to the sudden cardio pulmonary failure. 


The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year.
