Cold Case HEader

Victim: Bautista
Victim: Bautista

Case Description

The Victim: Tyrone Elliott "Kato" Bautista,  age 19, was shot and killed on August 1, 2002 near 2400 Payne Circle West.

The Crime:  At 10:32 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2002, CSPD officers responded to the 2400 block of Payne Circle West on a report of shots fired.  Arriving officers found the victim, 19 year old Tyrone "Kato" Bautista, deceased in the street from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The Investigation: Witnesses reported that victim had been visiting friends on Payne Circle and had left to buy beer from a nearby convenience store, and on returning at about 10:30 p.m., reported having gotten into an argument with several young black men at the store.  A few minutes later, witnesses saw two suspicous cars cruising slowly past the residence; one described as a white 2- door sedan resembling an Acura or Saturn.  This car stopped near the house, and several young black men got out and started yelling at victim.  Victim armed himself with a handgun and walked toward the car, whereupon the men got back inside and began to drive away.  Victim chased the car on foot a short distance down Payne Circle, at which time witnesses heard at least one shot fired, and victim fell to the street.  The suspicous vehicles fled the area in the direction of Astrozon Blvd, and were not located.

Dozens of interviews conducted over the course of of the next several weeks suggested that this drive-by shooting may have resulted from conflicts victim had been in with various persons and groups over the past several weeks.  Several possible suspect names were developed from different witnesses, however there was insufficient information to charge a specific individual, and physical evidence from the scene has thus far not been linked to a viable suspect.

The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year.
