The Victim: Joseph Talahytewa a 40 year old homeless male was hospitalized on February 7, 1996 and succumbed to his injuries several days later.  

 

The Crime: Police were called on a report that a person had been assaulted near the Pikes Peak Liquor Store on the corner of Pikes Peak and Wahsatch Blvd.  The victim was located at 214 Wahsatch and transported to Memorial Hospital.  Hours after undergoing surgery Mr. Talahytewa slipped into a coma and never regained consciousness.   He was pronounced dead on February 12, 1996. 

 

The Investigation: The investigation revealed that a fight took place during the afternoon of February 7, 1996 behind the Pikes Peak Liquor Store.  Mr. Talahytewa was able to communicate that he was assaulted by two people; one white male and one large Indian male who hit Mr. Talahytewa with a 2x4 to the head.   He was able to walk with his girlfriend to 214 Wahsatch where he was later found. 

 

The investigation into Mr. Talahytewa?s death remains open.

 

The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year.
