Case Description

File Number: 91-16443

The Victim: Karen Johns was discovered May 21, 1991, a victim of a fatal gunshot wound. She was 45 years old.

The CrimeAt approximately 2 p.m. on 05/21/1991, emergency personnel responded to Monument Valley Park and discovered the body of Karen Johns, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The victim was apparently in her vehicle at the time of the shooting.  The victim's vehicle had ran off the roadway, went over a concrete curb, struck a tree, and ran down a hillside before it came to rest inside the park. Several patrons in the park actually heard what sounded like a gunshot and saw the vehicle off the roadway rolling to a stop. One of those witnesses called in the emergency.  The American Red Cross employed Ms. Johns.

The Investigation: Detectives interviewed friends, co-workers and patrons that were in Monument Park at the time of the crime as well as other patrons that frequently used the park.   Several leads were developed but no arrests were made.  Ms. Johns's death remains an open investigation.

The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year.
