Case Description

File Number: 82-28827

The Victim: David M. McLaughlin, 23 years Old, stabbed to death 12/23/82.

The Crime: On 12/23/82 at approximately 11:45 p.m., a witness observed two vehicles stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of South Circle Drive and Fountain Boulevard. It appeared to the witness that the victim, David McLaughlin, was engaged in a verbal confrontation with the driver of the other vehicle, a 1970's model VW Bug.  Within a few minutes and a short distance from that apparent confrontation, David McLaughlin crashed his vehicle into a fence.  He was alone in the vehicle and was bleeding profusely. He was pronounced dead at 12:17 a.m., a victim of a fatal stab wound.

Sgt. David McLaughlin was stationed at Ft Carson. His company officers and fellow NCOs described him as a good soldier that was well liked. He spent most of the day and early evening with another soldier who was his best friend. This friend had loaned David his car to drive home so that he would not have to hitch hike home in the bad weather.  He left alone and was reportedly on his way home.

The Investigation: Detectives questioned numerous individuals who had any recent contact with David. Based on the information from the eyewitness, all local law enforcement agencies were on the look out for a 1970's model VW Bug driven by a slender African American male between 20 and 30 years old. Appeals were made to the public for help through local news media.  The police followed up on numerous leads, however this investigation remains open.

The Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide Cold Case Unit is currently responsible for approximately 90 unsolved homicide cases dating back to 1949. CSPD considers a case to be cold if it remains unsolved for more than one year.
