City of Colorado Springs / City Engineering / North Nevada Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project

North Nevada Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project

North Nevada Avenue Bridge
North Nevada Avenue Bridge
The bridge was originally constructed in 1947.  The concrete deck and railings have reached the end of their useful life and are in need of replacement.  Holes have formed in the deck, which have required the installation of steel plates.  The railings are in poor condition.

Project Description: The concrete deck and bridge railings will be completely replaced using staged construction.  The first stage will replace the deck and railings on the northbound structure.  The second stage will address the southbound structure.  Other project work will include rehabilitation of other portions of the structures, improving pedestrian facilities, landscaping at the south end of the bridge, accommodating future streetcar service and permanently closing the median at Lilac Street.

During construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction.  Access to residences and businesses will be maintained throughout construction.

Schedule:  It is anticipated that construction will last a maximum of 16 months, 8 months for Phase 1 and 8 months for Phase 2.  The project has been phased due to funding constraints.  The Phase 1 contractor has been selected and a notice to proceed will be issued in June 2010.  A notice to proceed for Phase 2 will be issued in January 2011.

Total Project Cost: Phase 1 $816,000, Phase 2 $809,000
