"Mobile Machinery" or "self-propelled construction equipment": "Mounted equipment" means any item of tangible personal property weighing more than five hundred (500) pounds which is rigidly mounted on or attached to a vehicle subsequent to its manufacture and which, when so mounted on or attached to a vehicle, becomes an integral part thereof essential to the operation of such vehicle in carrying out and accomplishing the purpose for which vehicle is being used. Special Mobile Machinery (SMM) or Special Mounted Equipment (SME) MUST be registered if it weighs 500 pounds or more and has it's own power source. The fine for unregistered machinery / equipment is $500.00 or double the ownership tax, whichever is greater.
There are many additional safety regulations that must be complied with, such as tires, suspension, steering etc. All motor carriers should obtain a copy of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) to refer to, for all the safety regulations. |
