Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Program
The unsupervised, experimental, mischievous or illegal use of fire by children in the United States is a major threat to personal safety and property. The Colorado Springs Fire Department offers an educational program for the juvenile firesetter. This program is made up of two components including a risk assessment and an educational class.
A child and their parent/guardian can participate in a risk assessment to help identify a child's level of firesetting behavior. Firesetting ranges from curiosity, to crisis, to pathological. All assessments are conducted at Fire Department Headquarters, 375 Printers Parkway, and last about one hour. Children ages three to seven are provided with prevention education immediately following their assessment. Those children ages eight to seventeen are eligible to attend a three-hour group class led by a Juvenile Firesetting Intervention Specialist, a firefighter and an adult burn survivor. Group classes are held monthly during the evening at Fire Department Headquarters.
There is no charge for participating in the Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Program with the exception of court ordered individuals. A $10 donation is recommended for participants as the program is supported through these contributions.
