Reminder: Milton E. Proby traffic advisory - Upcoming closure and detour starts Monday

Effective Monday, June 7, 2010, the existing Milton E. Proby Parkway from Powers Boulevard to Hancock Expressway will be closed to through traffic. This section of roadway averages close to 18,000 vehicles per day; however, the detour routes on Hancock Expressway and Powers Boulevard have the capacity to handle the additional traffic with minimal delay expected. Motorists needing access to and from the area should use the following detours, which will be marked:

  • Westbound traffic: From South Powers Boulevard, go west on Hancock Expressway. Turn left on South Chelton Road. Turn right on Hancock Expressway. Take Hancock Expressway to connect to South Academy Boulevard.
  • Eastbound traffic: From South Academy Boulevard, turn east on Hancock Expressway. Turn left on South Chelton Road. Turn right on Hancock Expressway. Take Hancock Expressway to connect to South Powers Boulevard.
The $55.4 million Milton E. Proby Parkway project is funded with Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (PPRTA) funds and has an estimated completion date of October 2011. The PPRTA was formed when voters in Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Green Mountain Falls and El Paso County approved a one percent sales tax in November of 2004 to address infrastructure and transit needs in the region. The tax revenue is divided into three categories: 55% capital improvements, 35% maintenance, and 10% transit. The capital portion of the tax will sunset in 10 years.
