City to cut ribbon on Memorial Park Tennis and Handball Center improvements

Colorado Springs, CO – Please join the City of Colorado Springs for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Memorial Park.

Date: Saturday, June 28, 2014

Time: 10:30 a.m.

Place: Memorial Park Tennis and Handball Center - 1315 E. Pikes Peak Ave., Colorado Springs

Mayor Steve Bach will open the ceremony which will include remarks from:

  • Karen Palus, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services
  • Alex Johnson, Parks & Recreation Advisory Board
  • Karen Brandner, Pikes Peak Community Tennis Association
  • Anthony Weber, Colorado Springs Tennis
  • Monty Sims, Louis Lambert and Stan Wolpoff -  on behalf of the handball community

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the tennis center enhancements will conclude the event.

About the Memorial Park Tennis and Handball Center Improvements:

  • The improvements at the Memorial Park Tennis & Handball Center are another great example of public/private partnerships that are creating new and exciting opportunities for the citizens of Colorado Springs
  • In addition to the improvements to the tennis facilities, we have added two new handball courts, with a third court planned
  • Improvements were made as a result of concerns from the community and other maintenance concerns
  • The enhancements create a state-of-the-art facility to accommodate tennis lessons, tennis and handball tournaments and community gatherings
  • Project funded by the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services department budget and contributions from the tennis and handball communities
  • Additional Memorial Park improvements include a new playground in the pavilion reservation area
  • Total project budget - $1.6 million
  • Tennis Complex Improvements:
  • 12 new post-tension tennis courts
  • New surfacing and paint
  • New nets
  • New event plaza and entry plaza
  • New landscaping to enhance the renovated center
  • Conversion from turf grass to native seed
  • New bleachers
  • Increase in the number of lights to allow for evening play
  • Handball Complex Improvements
  • 2 new courts
  • Future third court is designed and planned and awaiting funding
  • Incorporates new bleachers and a viewing space for tournaments and  gatherings
