The City introduces the Historic Westside Design Guidelines
The City of Colorado Springs, in conjunction with the Organization of Westside Neighbors (OWN), has completed the Historic Westside Design Guidelines.
The new guidelines are designed to help recognize and preserve the historic significance and architectural qualities of the residential community that developed around Old Colorado City between 1859 and 1930.
Local architect, Steve Obering with YOW Architects, was contracted to write the 127-page document with the help of City staff and members of OWN. Funding for the project was provided by an $18,000 grant from the State Historical Fund, a program of the Colorado Historical Society, and matched by $15,300 generated from fees from the local administration of the Colorado Income Tax Credit for Certified Rehabilitation program. Citizens and City staff contributed hundreds of volunteer hours toward the project. Three public meetings were held at the Westside Community Center in January and February 2010 to introduce the final document to the community. Copies of the book were available to attendees. As part of the grant, 300 copies of the document were produced and the remaining copies are available at the City's Office Service Department in the City Administration Building located at 30 S. Nevada Avenue.
