Colorado Springs, CO – On January 21, 2014 at 2:47 p.m., Colorado Springs firefighters were dispatched to a reported structure fire at the Cheyenne Vista Apartments, 360 Crestone Lane. The first CSFD engine arrived within five minutes to find a heavy fire and smoke in the second floor apartment. The occupant of the apartment in which the fire originated was alerted by his smoke alarm and his dog’s barking and immediately evacuated the building.

CSFD responded to this two alarm fire call with twelve heavy apparatus and several support units. There were approximately 55 firefighters and support personnel on scene.

There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters. Six units were heavily impacted by fire, smoke or water damage from firefighting efforts. Residents of the six impacted apartments were displaced from the apartment complex.

CSFD estimates that $1,359,055 of property/content was saved, limiting the overall loss to $242,065 in property/content.

Due to the severity of damage within the unit of origin, the specific origin and cause of the fire is undetermined. However, the status may change if additional information regarding this fire is discovered.

CSFD reminds the community to ensure you have smoke detectors installed within your living space on each level of the home and in each bedroom.  Maintain smoke detectors by checking the batteries regularly and changing them at least twice a year.  Also have and practice your family’s evacuation plan so you are prepared in case of a fire or another emergency.
