Tuesday, August 13, 2013

Press Release: 1308-007

Tuesday, August 13, 2013, 9:15 AM [RELEASE AT WILL]

On August 12, 2013, at 5:41 pm, an “Attempt to Contact” call was received concerning a young teenage girl who went for a walk by herself at 3:00 pm and failed to return home.

Due to the heavy rainfall, the young girl sought shelter under a bridge in the area of Maizeland Road and Academy Boulevard.  When her parents were unable to make phone contact with her, they notified the police department.

Our Major Case Violent Crimes Unit immediately responded and conducted a joint search for Rose M. Hammes {01/15/1996} with the Colorado Springs Fire Department and Search & Rescue.

Sadly, at 12:16 am, a body, fitting the description of Rose, was recovered under a bridge in a canal on Platte Avenue just west of Wooten Road.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy earlier this morning and positively identified the body to be Rose Hammes.  The cause of death has officially been ruled blunt force trauma and drowning.
