New traffic restrictions at railroad crossing

New traffic restrictions went into effect today at a railroad crossing south of downtown Colorado Springs. Effective immediately only passenger cars are allowed to cross the railroad tracks at Royer St. between Las Vegas St. and Fountain Blvd.

City crews installed new signs alerting motorists of the new restrictions and the Colorado Springs Police Department has been alerted so enforcement may begin.

 

The railroad crossing is the site of the recent train-bus collision that happened on Dec. 15, 2009.  The bus became high centered across the tracks and was struck by a train.

 

Permanently fixing the crossing would require raising Las Vegas St. four feet and is estimated to cost at least $1.5 million.
