Westside Community Center Partnership Renewed
Monday, November 26, 2012
The City of Colorado Springs and the Westside Community Center LLC have renewed their partnership agreement for another three years to continue operation of the Westside Community Center located at 1628 West Bijou Street. The new agreement will run through December 2015.
Due to significant budget reductions occurring in 2010, the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department explored alternative operational models to continue providing services to the community while reducing the need for General Fund dollars. The Center for Strategic Ministry, a 501(c)(3) that serves as a supporting organization of Woodmen Valley Chapel, submitted a successful proposal to partner with the City through the creation of the Westside Community Center LLC to operate the Center.
Since taking over the operation in April 2010, the LLC has made physical improvements to the site through cleaning, painting and reorganizing. Services have been continued and expanded to provide a well-rounded community center experience that includes everything from providing summer day camps and a reading mentor program for children to nutrition classes and a senior meals program for adults. On average, over 8,000 individuals participate in the Center’s programs on a monthly basis.
“We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with the Westside Community Center LLC to provide programs and services at the Westside Community Center,” says Karen Palus, Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. “Thousands of our citizens are benefitting from the wide range of opportunities provided by our partner organization. Having this kind of positive impact in the community is what our Department strives for with each and every facility and program.”
Dick Siever, Executive Director of the Westside Community Center, agreed. “The Westside Community Center LLC is very pleased to be given a three-year extension of our management agreement for the Westside Community Center. The City of Colorado Springs has been a wonderful partner. We especially appreciate the leadership and support provided by our City liaison Kim King, Parks Administration, Recreation and Cultural Services Manager. We are enjoying becoming a part of the Westside neighborhood!”
